It was the first Ontario Cup title in the club's history. A MAGICAL FIRST ONTARIO CUP CHAMPIONSHIP Ul4 BOYS DOWN DIXIE TO CLAIM PROVINCIAL TITLE HERB GARBUTT hgarbutt@metroland.com It didn't take Shayne Griffin long to see the poten- tial. "I saw it from the begin- ning. They definitely had the skill, but they were a lit- tle intimidated," the Milton Magic coach said. "There were things that had to be put in place, but you could tell they had an Ontario Cup in their future." : It was a bold statement, _ given that Milton had never won an Ontario Cup. But it took just two years for the Magic to make that poten- tial a reality. The Magic de- . feated Mississauga Dixie 3-0 Sunday to win the under-14 boys Ontario Cup title, the first in the Milton Youth Soccer Club's 30-year histo- "I'm proud of the boys," Griffin said. "They were pretty pumped about being the first team in Milton to -- win it. They didn't let the "magnitude of the moment become a hindrance. They rose to the challenge." Griffin "challenged his team this year by entering it in some highly competitive tournaments in the United States. He said he noticed a difference in the team once it realized it could compete with teams in those events. The Magic lost just one game in league play, 4-0 to Niagara, whom Milton met again in the quarterfinals. After falling behind 1-0 early in the second hdlf, Usuika Oyosoro pulled Mil- ton even at 1-1. Then, with eight minutes remaining, Jaylen Sinclair scored what proved to be the winner. The victory proved to be a costly one, though, as Milton lost its captain, Cristian Alfieri, to a broken ankle. Undeterred, the Magic blanked Waterloo United 2-0 in the semifinals, to earn a spot in the finals. . "They have resiliency, and I think that comes with the competition we faced," Griffin said. "We've - been down multiple goals, and they found a way to dig deep and make it-happen." One of those comebacks was against Dixie, the Mag- ic's opponent in the final. Af- ter falling behind 2-0, Milton scored four unanswered goals for the win that helped the Magic sweep the two- game season series. There would be no need for a rally in the final. Mil- ton added to its lead late in the half. McNally's cross was deflected off the cross- bar, but Dante Armond- 'Dawes was there to put the rebound home, for a 2-0 lead. McNally's second of the game would seal the victory late in the second half. Mar- cus Riviere beat his man down the line and found a wide-open McNally in front forsthe game's final goal.
