OPINION A new generation of achievers 'We want to attract sharp, - innovative young people," writes Reardon Partnerships can make for'some great initiatives. The partnership be- tween the Milton Chamber of Commerge, Wilfrid Lau- rier University and CN has certainly created -some- thing -special - an annual industry-academia event that has provided an im- portant platform to a new generation of supply chain achievers. The third World Class Supply Chain Summit, with-the theme Innovation in a Complex, Uncertain World, took place May 9 at Granite Ridge Golf Club. It attracted 115 attendees, featured leading established speakers from industry and academia, and gave a high- profile forum to five out- standing student. present- _ ers, who discussed their re- search, insights, and ideas in: supply chain- and logis- tics. More than a dozen oth- er students attended. ui Hy I serve as a co-chair of the summit, along with my colleague, Dr. Michael Haughton, professor of op- erations and decision sci- ences and CN research fel- low in supply chain man- agement (SCM) at Lauri- er's Lazaridis School of Business and Economics. As CN's vice-president of intermodal and automo- tive, I let the students at- tending the Summit know that CN - with 24,000 proud railroaders in Canada and } 3 GET 3,500 IN REBATES ON ALL NEW 2018 ESCAPE MODELS + GIBLE COSTCO MEMBERS Rf SUEUR VEE RH pI $1,000 | a COSTES "KEITH REARDON Column the United States - is hiring aggressively, ' We want to attract sharp: innovative young people to help us meet and- overcome the transporta- tion challenges of today and tomorrow. As the population of the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA) closes in on seven million, the need for additional transportation infrastructure and a more efficient supply chain has increased dramatically. Milton, with its ideal lo- cation, is well positioned to ' provide solutions on both fronts. Already an estab, ° lished logistics hub with * distribution centres oper- ated by leading companies such- as Amazon, Lowe's Canada and Whirlpool Canada, Milton will soon beconfe an educational centre as well. At CN, we'rg excited that 'Wilfrid Laurier, in partner- ship with Conestoga Col- lege Institute of Technolo- gy and Advanced Learn- ing, will be establishing an innovative academic cen- tre of excellence in Milton. It's the perfect match of ex- pertise and location. Laurier's Milton site will introduce complementary : engineering undergraduate programs linking students to highly-skilled STEAM 'THERE'S TO WAIT apis, wa HR « 2S YOUR FORD NO REASON RIGHT NOW INAESEE (Science, Technology, Engi neering, Arts, Mathemat ics) opportunities. - So much of success in business and academia to- day depends on the ability to attract and collaborate with strong, trusted part- ners. It was three years ago when CN established a partnership with Laurier's Centre for Supply Chain Management. Through the agreement, which includes the annual summit, CN supports in- ternships and a co-operative education program that's providing experience and summer employment to stu- dents studying supply man- agement. Together, CN and Lauri- er are preparing a new-gen- eration of leaders to main- tain and enhance a safe, smart, value-added supply chain. Our supply chain con- ference has turned into ex- actly the type of forum that we had envisioned. In early 2017, the Milton chamber joined the Summit partner-- ship, making it even more dynamic and relevant. Our conference is all about learning from each other, including learning from the next generation of supply chain leaders. CN will celebrate its 100th; anniversary next year, and we're going to do something special to mark the occasion at World Class Supply Chain 2019. We'll certainly be invit- ing more. students. I'm looking forward to learn- ing from them. -- Keith Reardon is CN's vice-president of intermo- dal and automotive.
