During Monday's com- mittee of the whole meeting, local councillors endorsed a supportive housing study' that recommends town poli- cy changes, such as remov- ing the current -500-metre separation distance be- tween group homes. The study team conduct- - ed public consultations on the topic, which revealed 'that the separation distance requirement is seen to be discriminatory, - explained consultant Dana Anderson in her presentation to the committee. ~ Those who provided feedback also called for more flexibility when it comes to where supportive housing can be located in Milton and what types of | structures can be used (i.e. not just single detached dwellings). "Overall, it was agreed | thatthereisaneed forawide variety of supportive hous- ing options within the Town of Milton," said a report from commissioner of plan- ning and development Barb Koopmans. "While the most pressing need appears to be options for the aging popula- tion, there is also a need for supportive housing for oth- er population groups in- cluding people with physi- cal disabilities, mental health issues, developmen- tal disabilities, substance abuse issues and youth." The study goes on to make a variety of recom- mendations, such as to: « Permit supportive hous- ingina wider range of dwell- ing types to include semi-de- tached, townhouse, apart- ment and condominium » Modify the current resi- dent caps toremove the min- STEVENSON MACDONALD "SWAN PERSONAL INJURY imum number of residents and raise the maximum to10 residents « Modify zoning permis- sions to allow supportive housing in all residential zones « Allow supportive hous- ing in both urban and rural areas, where residential use is permitted and in compli- ance with all local, regional and provincial land use:pol- icies : » Move away from the ex- istinglicensing programtoa registration program for supportive housing « Improve public commu- nication about supportive housing and educate .coun- cil, the public and support- ive housing operators about the new framework and pro- cess, as well as the impor- tant role of supportive hous- ing in the community. The committee directed staff to bring forward 'amendments at a future meeting to implement the recommended updates. + MEDICAL MALPRACTICE - Experienced Trial Lawyers Serving Ole] NI J Milton and Ee | 540 Cornwall Road PLUS ZA YCT ET!
