WANTED 20 PEOPLE WANTEDFOR A FREE HEARINGAID TRIAL buted to drivers being aware that the camera is off- line due to road construc- tion, thus leading to a change in driver behaviour and increase in accidents. While the number of se- rious collisions is going down, Harnum reports there's been an increase in red light infractions due to the expansion of the camera program and the replace- ment of old cameras with high-resolution units, pro- viding better clarity of li- cense plates. "The overall increase in infractions is also consis- tent with the growth in traf- fic volume and annual vehi-fic volume and annual vehi-f cle kilometres travelled year over year," he noted. According to the Region, the intersections where the most red light tickets were issued in 2018 are: • Guelph Line and South Service Road, Burlington: 2,782 • Trafalgar Road and Leighland Avenue, Oak- ville: 1,690 • Derry Road and James Snow Parkway, Milton: 1,412 Those caught running a light are fined $325. Milton Mayor Gord Krantz contended the Re- gion is only in the red light camera business to raise revenue. The Region receives about $1.9 million annually in Provincial Offences Act revenue, and that number has climbed to $2.3 million in the 2019 budget. Halton Hills Councillor Clark Somerville spoke in favour of the program, em-favour of the program, em-f phasizing the revenue from the cameras is only related to people not stopping at in- tersections. "I'd like to see us have double the number of cam- eras because the statistics show it works," he said. Burlington Councillor Rory Nisan asked if dummy cameras have been used in other municipalities to curb dangerous driving at inter- sections. Harnum explained that staff doesn't recommend such a tactic as they impact the credibility of the pro- gram. "Once we get infractions down, we start moving the cameras to different loca- tions," he noted. Traffipax has been con- tracted by the Region to sup- ply, operate and maintain all existing and future red light camera sites. The Re- gion also has an agreement with the City of Toronto to share operating expenses of the Joint Municipal Pro- cessing Centre for the red light tickets. This year's transporta- tion operating budget for Halton includes $769,580 to operate and maintain the 20 red light cameras.
