While not everyone will be happy with the outcome, the Halton District School Board has chosen the boundaries for a new public school in northeast Oak- ville. At Wednesday's school board meeting, trustees unanimously voted in fa- vour of an option (14C) that will have the new No. 2 facil- ity open as a dual-track school. The decision also has Oo- denawi Public School be- coming a single-track En- glish school, Sunningdale Public School undergoing French Immersion bound- ary changes and there will be the creation of a new to- be-determined area and re- moval of development from study totals. Boundaries for English students at the new school will be North Park Boule- vard/Dundas Street to the south, Burnhamthorpe Road to the north, Neyaga- wa Boulevard/Sixth Line to the west and Trafalgar Road to the east. The French Immersion boundaries will be Dundas to the south, Burnham- thorpe to the north, Neyaga- wa to the west and Trafal- gar to the east. The school will open in September 2020 with junior kindergarten to Grade 7 En- glish classes and Grades 2 to 6 French Immersion. Grade 8 English and Grade 7 French Immersion will be added in 2021-22 and Grade 8 French Immersion the following school year. According to the board's report, larger boundaries for the new Oakville north-for the new Oakville north-f east No. 2 school's French Immersion creates a more "viable program with a greater number of students in the program." "I would like to thank ev- eryone who has been in- volved in this process. I would like to recognize that this is a difficult decision because we're not going to make everyone in the com- munity happy," said Kelly Amos, Oakville wards 5 and 7 trustee. While a trustee's job is to represent the community, Amos said ultimately it is about "doing what's right" for the students.for the students.f Among her "core val- ues" include the public board being English. "As such, we offer many optional programs. One of those is French Immersion. We believe in walk-to-We believe in walk-to-W schools and we believe it is important to limit the num- ber of moves a student has to make in their school ca- reer," said Amos. The board's 2017-18 long- term accommodation plan (LTAP) noted the primary reason for the new school was to accommodate new growth north of Dundas, as well as to provide accommo- dation relief to River Oaks and Oodenawi public schools. It also acknowledged the need in the North East Oak- ville Secondary Plan for a total of six elementary schools -- Oodenawi, Oak- ville northeast No. 2 and four more proposed sites.four more proposed sites.f While Superintendent of Education Colette Ruddock acknowledged option 14D offered "some solutions," particularly to the parents of French Immersion stu- dents at Oodenawi, it didn't meet the top three criteria identified by the Boundary Review Committee (BRC).Review Committee (BRC).R "It does not relieve the enrollment pressures at Oo- denawi. It looks (like), by 2022, the enrollment at Oo- denawi is (more than) 1,000 kids.
