Tae friend. ler Miles was, the farther off did marriage seem! "If he would only quarrel with me, I could put in good work in the reconciliation line! Or if I could only make him lose his head and kiss me, then I could do the 'jeune fille" stunt of newly-awakened passion and swoon into his arms like a Vie- torian maid! It would be all up with him, then, for he's 82 quixotic that he'd feel he must propose--"" Thus mused the artless girl. Never had it dawned on her that the field was not entirely hers for the manipulating. Miles, naturally, had been feted. But--thank heaven!--he still re- mained unspoilt. "I'll have sole with champignon sauce, please. Capon to follow. Anc I think--" her eye ran down the wine-list, "I think we might cele- brate your American successes in » bottle of sparkling muscatel? What do you say?" Good wine loosened tongues and freed the emotions quite; a little. "Number 371" was very potent, that she knew. Miles was rather abstem- fous. for an artist. His reacties would be all the quicker. "Anything you choose," he re- plied nonchalantly, Then, to a wait- er:-- "A bottle of '371' please. And salt- ed almonds for mam'selle." "You remember all my little weaknesses," cooed Miss Leonie, edg- ing a little nearer to him on the curving soft, and gazing soulfully at him with her made-up eyes. They were naturally rather small and beady, but art--she fondly thought ~-had remedied nature's error. He returnéd her gaze with such 4 frank, free smile that she was almost disconcerted. "A penny for your thoughts?" she queried. (That often led to: some- thing.) He smiled again, his teeth a strong flash' of white. (Thank heaven! he was 'bien soigne;" well- groomed. No flowing ties and baggy velvet jacket! No unkempt locks and grubby hands. No pose! No jar- gon of the studios! He was simple and direct and unaffected. Just to look at 'him, one could see he was Queer Happenings on the Moan. It was all very queer about the Twins. They weren't Twins at all any more, but just great flat splash- es on the ground like paint. You could see their heads and faces and hands and feet and clothes, but they looked exactly like pictures some- one had painted on the ground. It must have been because they fell such a distance from the giant boy's hand, that they smashed so flat. But it hadn't hurt a bit! It felt just as though they had fallen on elderdown pillows. 3 "We're in a nice fix now!" sald Nick, trying to look at Nancy. "1 should say so," sald Nancy. "It someone could scrape us up, maybe we could roll down a hil and get all right again." At that minute a mean rushed out from a restaurant across the street where he had been baking * wheat er looked as big as a snow shovel. "Don't move and I'll fix you," he shoulted. "Just a minute." With that he deftly slid his cake turner under Nancy and scraped her 'up. Then he slid the cake turner un- der Nick and scraped him up. 3 "Now if you'll just roll down this hill," he remarked, "I think you'll be as fit as fiddles again. I'l turn you both up like hoops and give you a start." ] 'Which he did. Nancy rolled and Nick rolled, and cakes in a window. His cake turn-| addicted to cold baths, fresh air and exercise, and moderate living.) "I was thinking that you reminc me so much of a bright, inquisitive little bird, that used to twitter on the branch of: a tree outside by studio window," said Miles pleasantly. "But how thrilling! I ought rather to say 'how trilling'! giggled his pleased companion. "A sky-lark? 'Hall to thee, blithe spirit!' That's a poem, Isn't it.""--conscious of the delightful possibilities in this simile. 80 he was dashed, however, when Miles said frankly. "It was a robin you reminded me of. Not'the song, but something about the turn of the head, and the bright eyes." "Huh? Perky---and beady!" She jerked her head to one side, irritat. ed at the anti-climax. Was this the best that he could do? "There! Just like that!" he point- ed out, triumphantly. "Often when I saw the little fellow, I'd say to my- self: "There's Leonie Day." " "Well, I'm flattered that you thought of me at all. It's a crumb of comfort even to a robin!" she re- torted. "That reminds me that I'm not averse to crumbs when they drop from your particular table. And you haven't told me yet how nice T look, or if you like my frock, or anything consoling of that sort! I'll be a docile little robin, and I'll swol- low pretty speeches greedily, I prom- ise you!" His denseness needed a crude stimulant, she told herself. Miles was embarrassed. was she driving at? Why did practise coquetry on him? "You always look all right," was his lame rejoinder. He was reliev- ed when a waiter bustled forward to lay hor-d'ceuvres upon the table, thus creaticg a diversion. Leonie could have slapped obtuse creature. That anyone so goodlooking as he was could be so ignorant of now to please a woman, was incredible! Once they were mar- ried, she would make him toe the line! She suppressed her wrath, how- ever, and nibbled daintily at egg mayonnaise and lettuce. She wasn't going to swell the ranks of foolish maids who nipped romances in the bud by yielding to the suubbing What she the OZ MIE 'Y Olive Roberts Barto. WX, "This is a queer place all rightee," sald Nick. "The funny part of it is that no matter what happens to you, nothing hurts." "Oh, look!" said Nancy suddenly, pointing to a women across the street. "What?" said Nick. But he could see for himself what Nancy meant. For while he looked, the woman changed into two women and then into three women and then into four, five, six, seven women all exactly like the first one. All with umbrellas in thelr right hand and baskets in their left hands. 'It must be the seven wives going to St. Ives," sald Nancy. "Oh, look, look! Now there are only five--no three! Why, they've all gone but one." But in another minute there were seven again. And so it went--the woman turning into seven women and them back into one, like rain. drops miglting together. "Everybody is doing the same thing," said Nick pointing down the street. And even the dogs and cats! For goodness sake, just look, Nancy." Sure enough, men and women and boys and girls and cats and dogs were all turning into threes and fours and sevens and then back in- to ones again. "Maybe there is something wrong with out eyes, Nick," sald Naney. "Perhaps we are just seeing things!™ "No," said the pink ticket, jump- ing out of Nick's pocket. "It's all true! The city of 'Any Place At AI" impulse. That was the one sure way to lose a man. But how snpoying that he didn't think she wac as pretty as a lover ought to think! My goodness! there would be some reason, had he seen her in the callow hours of early morning in her kimono, and with- out her war-paint on. Leonie had lost two lovers by an unexpected 'rencontre' of that sort. But Miles, thank heaven! had only viewed the little lady at her very best. It was unflattering to see how far sway his thoughts were. After the simile of the robin, she wasn't go- ing to offer him another penny. . . but she wondered, all the same. Did she but. know it, they had winged across the Channel to a very different type of girl. ' He was curs- ing the business energy of his man- ager who had arranged the Paris exhibition to follow on the heels of the New York triumph, and who had wired him to come on at once. Why! he hadn't even had the time to tele- graph Marcella, but had had to leave that to a servant, thrusting her address into the man's hands just as the train was leaving. It was the deuce and all, too, that now, without the memorandum of it, he wasn't positive of her address! Had the long, ardent letter he had penned her on the boat-train and on the Channel crossing ever reached her? There was barely time for a re- ply. . .and yet, she might have wir- ed! She had hurt him at the dock, too, by her acquiescence to' the arrange- ments of Trewnan, the domineering, rather insolent fellow who had come to meet her, and had taken complete possession of the girl ss though it was his right. Was it his right? ? What about the radiogram that had so confused her? Treman was the name. There was a big city fel- low by the name of Treman. . Leonie's tones--metallie, with an edge to them---cut into his worry- ing thoughts. "Since you decline to 'drink to me only with thine eyes" and yet re- fuse to see the wine that's been standing in the pail of ice at your elbow for the last five minutes, T suppose I hsall have t6 open it my- self." she said, complainingly. He started and a streak of crept into his bronzed cheeks. "I'm awfully sorry," he apologiz- od. "Here, walter, uncork this bottle." Then, as he himself pour. ed the golden liquid into her wlass: "Forgive me. I was dreaming." In their early teens it is quite com- |} mon for girls to outgrow their strength, and mothers should care- || fully watch the health of their daugh- ters at this time. It is when the strength is sapped by rapid growth that anaemia develops. The first signs may be noticed by peevishness, languor and headaches. The face grows pale, breathlessness and palpi- tation become apparent, with low spirits and depression. Neglected anaemia often leads to a decline, but if you see that your daughter's blood is enriched, there need be no cause for anxiety. finest blood-builder ever discovered is Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. They will build up your girl's health and en- |g= sure for her healthy womanhood. In proof of this Mrs. George Justason, Black's Harbor, N. B.,, says:-- "I think Dr. Williams' Pink Pills a won- derful medicine. My daughter; Mar- garet, was in such a badly run down condition that we feared she was go- [li - ing into g decline. Her face was pale, {-- the least exértion would leave her breathless and she suffered from headaches. She had no appetite and lost a lot in weight. Up to the time we began giving her Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, no treatment had helped her. But thanks to the use of this wonderful medicine she is again well and strong, showing no signs of the trouble that had so weakened her." In all troubles due, to weak, watery blood, Dr. Williams' Pink Pills will ba found a reliable remedy. Sykes, president of St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y., in acknowledging a copy of The British Whig, of July 5th, ex- pressed appreciation of "your fine editorial, 'A New Epoch at St. Law- rence University'," and adds: "It was most gracious of you to speak so highly of our college and I hasten to assure you of my own and the appreciation of our faculty and board of Trustees.' I am especially appreciative since it comes from our neighbors just across the river who themselves reside ina college town. I cherish the same feelings in my heurt for your own college which I know is of high standing, and desi to co-operate in every way possib 3 in advancing educational interests of the people in Canada as well as in our own state.
