Another well-known Cornwall re- sident; Duncan Monroe, the insur- ance king, passed his eighty-second birthday Friday, Dec. 19th. Robert Miller Passes. Robert Miller, aged eighty-two years, passed away at his home, Carleton Place, on Saturday last. Mr. Miller enjoyed fairly good health up till Friday of last week, On that day he suffered an attack of acute indigestion to which he sue- cumbed the following day. Deceased was born on July 8th, 1842. Retired From Command. Lt.-Col. W. H. Magwood, Corm- wail, having retired from the com- mand of the 154th Regiment, with which he has been connected for many years, Lt.-Col. J. A. Gillies has beh appointed to succeed him and the appointment has been gaszet- ted. Capt. W. J. Franklin, of Alex- andria, has been promoted to be major and commaiding officer of the Glengarry Cdimpany. With Watch. At the closing session of the county: council of the United Coun- ties of Northumberland and Dur- ham, Warden W. M. Fowlds, Has- tings, was presented with a gold watch and chain and locket suitably engraved as a token of appreciation of his efforts as warden of the coun- ties for the year 1924. A verbal address was made by Mr. Wood, Millbrook, after which Mr. Fowlds made a most suitable reply. Were Given Presents. About sixty friends and neigh- bors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. Lloyd, in. the 8th Con- cession of Thurlow, to say farewell to the family, Mr. Lloyd has been cheesemaker at Zion Factory for ten years, and his removal to Belleville is cause of general regret, The fam. {ly were fine church workers and were remembered with an address and suitable gifts. Farmers' Dairy By-law. In connection with the Farmers' dairy by-law to be voted on at Nap- anee, it is explained that the com- pany has entered in an agreement with 'the town, that the company will continuously operate the plant and have a minimum wage sheet of | at least $20,000 per annum, during continuance of the operation of 3 fails Bs at the last sittings of the County Court at Napanee in twp cases aris- ing from an automobile accident on the Deseronto Road, of Haslett vs. McVicker and Scouten vs. McVicker, and has given judgment as follows: Haslett ve. MéVicker--Judg- ment for the plaintiff, Thomas George Haslett, for $187.25, and to the plaintiff, Amy Anne Haslett, $250.00; with costs of action. Scouten vs. McVicker--Judgment for the plaintiff, Albert H. Scouten, $251.90, and or the plaintiff, Alice Scouten, $100.00; with costs of ac- tion. Two New School Buildings. During the year two mew school houses have been erected -- a two- roomed school at Cherry Valley and a new kindergarten at Picton. The Cherry Valley school is one of which the county should be proud. It is built on the lines of the Hud- son school in Northern = Ontario, which has won just praise over the whole province. In this school two years' high school work can be ta- Ken. This will benefit the whole township of Athol. The school 1s provided with a large basement for playrooms, inside closets and an ex- tensive school yard. Passing of Mrs. Elizabeth Hyatt. After'an illness of several weeks, Mrs. Elizabeth Hyatt passed away at the home of her son, Frank Hy- att, East Lake. Mrs. Hyatt had attained the age of eighty-six years, The funeral was held on Sunday, the service being conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. Mullins, Interment was made in the Church of Christ cemetery, West Lake. Mrs. Hyatt {eaves to revere the memory of a kind and loving mother, four sons --Hegbert, Detroit; Finley, West Lake; Frank, East Lake, and Mer- tox, Rochester. Her husband, the late Samuel Hyatt, predeceased her twenty-seven years ago. Her eld- est son, John, died the past sum- mer. The deceased lady, during most of her life, lived on a farm, wag very industrious and hospitable. Lennox Live Stock Association.
