A large number from Kingston and other outside points are expect- ed in Ganamogue on Labor Day for the garden party which is being held at the Ganamogque Inn by St. John's church: W. Wallace Jones left last even- ing to spend the week-end with; friends in Orillia. The dance of the Canoe Thursday evening was the successful affair, and many noticed from outside points. Mrs. Jack McLellan and children, who have been spending the sum- mer with Mrs. J. B. Mooney, Charles street, are returning to their home in Montreal, to-day. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dupuis (formerly Miss Mayne Brennan), Montreal are arriving dn town to- day, and will be guests of Mr, and Mrs. M. Brennan for a short time. Messrs. Patterson, Shaver, O'- Reilly and Gardiner of Brockville were among those in town for the Canoe Club dance. Measrs. Ted Steacy, Leslie Smith, 'Waiter Campion, Leo DuMoulin and Paul Cunningham motored down from Kingston Thursday evening for the Canoe Club dance. It was a full dress affair and plenty of make- up Was consumed in the presentation. The actors were painters and decor- ators and the play was the prepara- tion of the big show house for the coming season when some splendid attractions will be presented for the first time In this city and country to the Grand's crowds of patrons. All the woodwork throughout the place has been freshly cleaned and painted. The lobby and the portico and even the big electric sign have all received their share of attentiom In the aisles of the main floor and the balcony cork carpets are being laid and the decorative water color- ing of the walls and boxes have been cleaned and retouched. Curtains, velours and upholstery of all sorts have been taken out and thoroughly cleaned and next Thursday will come the Grand opening with "The First Year." Back in the dressing rooms exten- sive improvements have also been made, Running water has been pro- vided in each little dressing room and other appointments made much more acceptable entertainers. Ag already announced a big com- petition is under way for the five pairs of seats offered by thc Whig for this play to the five Kingston couples, nearest to a year married, who first present themselves at the Whig office on Tuesday morning next. T0 OPEN PICTON FAIR Lieutenant-Governor Accepts Invitation--Teacher Returns From South American Trip. Picton, Aug. 30.--F. W. Newman, vice-president of the Prince Edward Agricultural Society, has recelved a communication from the Lieutenant- Governor of Ontario in which he ac- cepts the invitation of the society to formally open the annual fair for 1924. Albert Rodway has bought Doney Thompson's property on Burns ave- nue, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson will take up pesidence in part of the house owned by their gon on Mary street east. Mr. and Mrs. Morley G. Kicks and family left by motor for thair home in Milwaukee after a visit with old friends in Prince Edward county. W. R. Williams, science teacher of Picton Collegiate Institute, has returned from a trip to Soulh Ame- rica and the West Indies. Mr. Wil- lilams succeeded in securing while away many interesting curios which will be of interest to future classes which are fortunate enough to come under his instruction. J. L. Ashley has taken his seat in the town council which was declar- ed vacant owing to the absence from town of Major BE. G. Hudgin. Dr. A. W.
