You can shift from high into second without a clash at any speed which is within the range of second gear driving, but you must be able to judge the approxi- mate speed of the car and the en- gine. Doc explains in the accompanying strip just how to make the shift. Af- ter moving the gear shift lever into neutral position preparatory to mak- ing the shift, be sure to let the clutch pedal come up, engaging the clutch, @ before you speed up the engine. The speed of the engine should be boosted to approximately the same speed as it vi ould have to turn over to drive the car at the same pace in second gear. Then engage the clutch and shift into second gear. Take your car out on a side street and try thls, if you have not already mastered it. A few minutes of prac- tice will enable you to make the shift at any speed within the second gear range. # ' | Dirt Track Records | a | Canadian dirt track records have been shattered repeatedly this year |by Sig Haugdahl, the little Scandi- navian pilot, who has been the star performer in the racing events in the west. Haugdahl, like other veteran drivers, is particularly careful about his tire equipment. It takes a super tire to withstand the heat, strain and stresses caused by shooting through space at over a mile a min- ute. Many speed records have fallen on Firestone equipment. At the 500- mile Indianapolis race, the blue ribbon event of the year, the only twelve cars to finish the race were all Firestone equipped and Joe Boyer on his Firestone, equipped Duesen- berg special set. a new world's record when he covered the 500 miles at an average of 98.24 miles an hour. SHOPPERS' GARAGE FOR BOSTON Department Store to Give Free Park- ing Service to Customers, A Boston department store has set out to solve the parking problem for its customers, Here in Boston, where streets are narrow and winding, trafic conges- tion is so great that the city has been compelled practically to alimi- nate all downtown parking privil- eges. Obviously, it has had a discourag- ing effect upon shoppers. But the Jordan Marsh Company, realizing the urgent need for a so- lution of the problem, has announc- ed its plan to build an eight-storey garage, accommodating 600 cars, for the exclusive and free use of its cus- tomers. Plans provide for fireproof stair- ways and passenger elevators as well as double system motor ramps, frop one floor to another, with separate ramps for up and down trafic. It will be just as easy to park a car on the eighth floor as on the first, the architects say. Other features of the garage are waiting rooms, filling stations, wash- ing stalls, supply service and a tele- phone and signal system connecting with the store so that a car may be ready on request, Cars will be parked one row deep on each floor and each automobile will have an individual stall. The garage will be located within three minutes of the store, Checking Up With The Other Fellow THE MOTORIST WHO DRIVES HIS OWN CAR and is anxious to keep it at its highest efficiency and in the best find much help toward this end in other cars of the same make possible condition, will occasionally trying out or riding in and model--for instance in the dealer's demonstrator--and by comparing notes with fellow owners of identical cars. AlN gasoline engines are really air cooled. Where an engine is known as a water-cooled power plant it simply means that the additional cooling medium, water, is used as an aid to air cooling. Water-cooled en- gines are, therefore, indirect "air coolers." The water being arranged 80 as to circulate around the cylin- A ders, the valves and through the head, conducts the excess heat away from the combustion chambers. To keep the water at a temperature slightly below boiling it Is in turn conducted to the radiator, where it is air cooled, both by the draft of air through the core and the action of the fan.
