Amplifier The Hazeltine neutrodyne system and the Superdyne are probabiy the only commercial radio frequency am- plifiers that really '"'neutralize" the tube feed-back to prevent oscillation. Practically all other radio frequency amplifiers have to use some form of "losser" to stop oscillation; that is, either by directly introduciug re- sistance into the circuit, or, through the use of a grid potentiometer, op- erating the tubes below maximum efficiency, they manage to keep the set from going into oscillation. Now it is all very well to talk about neutrodying a radio-frequency amplifier, but many people who are using the usual type of fixed r.f. transformer are not able to neutra- lize them in the customary Habeltine fashion, and naturally are more or less reluctant to tear out costly equipment and discard it. For such readers we present the two circuits shown® in the illu- stration, which afford neutraliza- tion of oscillation perfectly satis- factorily when used with ordinary fixed transforiners. The trick is accomplished by using a different in- | Hardware For ~ Hot Weather | : Refrigerators-- White Enamel lined-- $18.00, $27.00, $50.00, $60.00 * Screen Doors, 2° 8" x 6° 8":2'10"x6" 10"; 3x7 ............5250and $3.75 Window Screens creesanes..50c. to 85¢. In Fig. 1 is shown a scheme that will work quite well with one stage | of transformer-coupled r.f., and may work with two, although it is not guaranteed that it will prevent oscil- lation in a two-stage. This system is one of the so-called Rice systems. This coil is tuned con condenser "C," which is a .0005 mfd. variable. Coil "B'" may be 30 turns of the same size wire wound on right over | Co, 'A." A layer or two of paper | should be put on between the two | windings. Condenser "C-2" is the | usual form of neutrodon, or may be | a three or five-plate vernier conden- | ser. The usual r.f. transformer is shown, and a variometer is also in-| dicated in the plate of the dectector | circuit for obtaining maximum re- | generation. The circuit in Fig. 2 is also a Rice | adaptation, and is perhaps slight- ly more desirable than that shown | in Fig. 1. The tuning condenser "Ci is a .0005 mfd. variable, and is con nected across the whole coil. One | end of the coil, it will be seen, goes to the grid of the tube as usual; the other end goes through the neutra- | lizing capacity 'C-2" to the plate. As before, our main tuning coll, which in this case is "B," may be 45 | turns of No. 22 d.c.c. wire on a four- | inch tube, with a tap at the 22 turn. | The primary '"A" is the usual form | of fixed primary, consisting of about | 15 turns of No. 22 wound on right | over "B." { With the circuit shown in Fig. 2 it is possible to stabilize a two-stage | transformer-coupled r.f.: amplifier simply -by employing the centre-tap tuning coil "B" with the necessary connections to the first tube.
