The Accomplishment of a Fine Old Plevna Gentleman, The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Vaness, Plevna, are sorry to hear that they have both been very ill. Mr. Vaness, who is ninety-three years old, has enjoyed the best of health until lately. This spring he made a splendid boat for himselt and a water wheel for his brother, Able Vaness, who owns a saw mill at Plevna. Queen of Oshawa Selected. The Queen of Oshawa for the grand historical pageant has at length been selected. The fortunate person is Miss Helen Fowler, of the G.M.C. staff. Miss Fowler is well fitted for the enviable role, says the Oshawa Reformer, being a popular young lady and a splendid example of the modern Canadian girl. She is tall, belofgs in the brunette class and has that essential qualification required of a queen, that is grace combined with stateliness. A charge of unlawful assault on a young woman, about twenty-five years of age, of Kennebec township, has been laid before Magistrate Bradshaw against a young man twen- ty-four years of age, of the same township. The offence ¥appened on the afternoon of July 7th when the young woman was going to the pos* office. She was able to break away. In 'the meantime the relatives of @ accused have placed him in the :kwood hospital, where he has pre- viously received treitment; and it is understood that the charge will not be pressed.
