Be Sure Of Engine Lubrication Before Running The Car EVEN THOUGH EXTRA OIL 'was put into the cylinders, when the car was laid up, after several months of idleness the engine may be found very stiff and perhaps "set". No attempt should be made to turn It over with the starter until a trial with the handcrack has shown it to turn freely. If it cannot be hand-cranked, a little kerosene may be Injected into each cylinder and the spark-plugs be left out temporarily. If even then it cannot be started with the crank, it usually can be by jacking up one rear wheel and applying hand power to the spokes in alternate directions, with high gear engaged. After it is loosened up, a little cylinder oil should bd injected into each cylinder and the plugs replaced, when the self-starter can be employed. Have the plugs clean and dry and make sure that the carburetor-bowl actually fills with gasoline, by noting the position of the priming pin or by producing a slight flooding of the fuel bowl. As soon as the engine is running, see whether the oil-gage shows thedpressure it should and if the normal 'pressure does not build up after a very short time, shut the engine down and investigate. Perhaps the pump is air bound and needs to be primed by supplying oil from a squirt can, through the pressure relief valve cap or through some other opening in the system. Do not run tho engine fast or for long until it is certain that oil is circulating normally and give it a considerable period of idle running before it is made to operate the car. Occasionally it happens that the generator , of a long disused car may fail to furnish current, when the engine is first started. If this should be the case, cleaning the commutator by holding upon it 'a cloth barely moistened with kerosene, while the engine is running, will generally cause excitation, but if not, a momen- tary closing, by hand. of the cut-out points .while the generator is at charging speed, will almost always cause it to generate. MIXTURE OVERRICH IN TWO CYLINDERS that on my friend's car, supposed to be exactly llke mine and bought at the same t! ewill speed up to 41 m. p. h. and stiN run smoothly. How can this be accofypnted for and is there anything I < do to Im- prove my engine? Answer: Are you sure your car is geared the same as the other D. F. 8. asks: Why do No. 1 and No. 6 spark-plugs of my engine become covered with a heavy coating of dry black soot or dust? Answer: This dry soot is carbon deposited from the Imperfect com- bustion of overrich mixture that is supplied to these two cylinders and the reason why these cylinders r ceive too rich a mixture, while the others do not, is because the distri- bution of the fuel by the intake manifold is unequal. The fact that the intake passages of this engine are not exhaust heated makes it probable that they contain consid- erable liquid gasoline most of the time, and this is not drawn equally to all cylinders. The carburetor of this car is adjustable ffom'the seat and you may find that by making its setting a little leaner you can reduce the richness of 'the charge entering Nos. 1 and 6 below the sooting point while yet keeping the ,mixture entering the other cylin- ders rich enough to develop satis- factory power. ---- IDENTICAL ENGINES VIBRATE DIFFERENTLY one? If it is geared lower, this may account for the difference in wibration, as your engine would have to run faster than the other to attain any given car speed. If the two cars are geared the same, the difference in vibration may arise from less careful balancing of the moving parts of your engine, or inequalities in the action among its cylinders, which are absent in the other. Without -going to un- warranted expense in building this engine over, there is not much you can do to correct its yibrating ten- dencies except to tune it up so that all cylinders act as nearly uniform- ly as possible. ts BREAKER-CAM SETTING E.'J. B. asks: In'which direc- tion should one shift the cam of the timer on its shaft to make the spark come earlier? Answer: By shifting it in the direction in which it rotates 'you will cayse the spark to occur earlier. H. Y. writes: The engine of my car vibrates very annoying- ly. at speeds above 32 m. p. h,, but " FISHERMAN'S LUCK, GOOD BUSINESS "+ "When you see a desk-ribbon Jockey casting French River, ° or exhibiting the skin of a Nipigen treut, an he. for a good i business man."
