Picton, Oct. 4.--On Wednesday morning, at about 11 o'clock a fire al- warm was given from the house of Mr. Jones on Union street. The firemen spent considerable time in searching for the fire-truck, which it seemed had been moved from its original resting place. Hence a large number of peo- ple who had gathered at the cornérvof "Main and Centre streets to see the truck round it on two wheels was dis- appointed. The fire proved to be a false alarm, anyway. Mrs. D.]J. Shannon gave bridge party in honor of Miss Ella Barber, who accompanied her father, Rev. F. L. Barber, on a visit to Pic- ton for the centenary celebration of the Anglican church, Mrs. Guy John- son won the prize, The big event on Wednesday was the supper and sacred concert given by le Engrch of St. Mary Magdalene. The suppet was given by the Ladies' Guild of the church, Rev. F. L. Barber, late of this parish, new of Gananoque, presiding as chairman. The affair was well attended, over two hundred peo- ple being present. Short speeches were made by Mayor Newman, Warden Hughes, E. M. Young, Rev. Mr. Cow- an, Rev. Mr. Gratten, and Rev. Mr. | Lansworth. At eight o'clock a sacred concert was held in the church, given by the choir, assisted by an orchestra of five violins and a saxaphone, and by Mrs. Stobey, Belleville, The leader was the church choir leader, Ross Hunter. In the orchestra were Messrs, Green- field, Cooper, Moffat and Adams, and Miss Rayner. Besides Mrs. Stobey's beautiful solos there were solos given by Miss Holmes, Miss C. Porter, and Messrs, Croft and Willum. Another feature of the evening was a male sex- tette selection rendered by Messrs, WV, Croft, Willum, J. Hooper, R. Hunter, H. B. Lulley and Vincent. After the concert the choir were cn- tertained to supper at the parish house. -------------- INDUSTRY WOUND UP Deseronto Company Decide to Go Out of Business.
