RAP FORD SYSTEM AS SOUL KILLING The British Industrial Wel- fare Society In Conference At: Balliol College. London, Sept. 18.--An attack on the effects of the Ford system of mass production was made yesterday at the Conference of Industrial Wel- fare held at Balliol College, Oxford, under the auspices of the Industrial Welfare Society. The discussion had been started on the need of adopting for English factories some definite plan of ad- ministration, and the suggestion was made that this would deprive people of initiative and would lend to be- come "soul killing, like the Ford works." Dr. William W. Johnson, medical officer of the Ford Motor Company, took exception to the epithet, say- ing that Ford employees in Great Britain all receive three shillings per hour and none of them seemed to have lost his som. Other speakers, however, argued that a good deal of Bolshevist preaching came from those who had to spend their days on rapetition pro- cesses, and Miss Mathias, of the Eng- lish Electric Company, declared: "We don't want men of inteiligence if we are going to Fordize industry." BELIEF OF ONTARIO'S PREMIFR. Has Mandate to do as He Likes With OG. T. A. Ottawa, Sept. 18. -- It is under- stood here on good authority that Premier Ferguson has decided that 'the recent election results will be regarded by him as sufficient man- date, without any further referen- dum to the people, for whatever ac- tion he and his government may take in connection with the Ontario temperance act. The whole issue, it Is held, was fully discussed during the campaign, the mandate to govern réceived by Mr. Ferguson was a clear cut one, and the members of his ad- ministration believe themselves to be fully seized of the opinion of the People of the province without further reference to the latter. ---------------- Watching The Border Line * For the Escaped Convicts United States Consul F. §. New York, Sept. 18.--Because he wanted to see New Ycrk, Alain J. Gerbault, international tennis star, crossed the Atlantic single-handed in a thirly-foot ten-ton racing cutter built thirty-one years ago by the late Dixon Kemp, famous sailor and de- signer of King Edward's private yacht. . Gerbault started from Cannes, Francg. on April 5th, of this year. and landed late on Friday night at the foot of Fort Totten, L.I., after traversing 5.600 miles of ocean in 142 days. An exhibition of the past history of sailing shows that Gerbault creat- ed a record for a trans-Atlantic voy- age in small eraft. In the summer of 1918 Captain Thomas Drake, an Englishman, of Gravesend, near Lon- don, in the Sir Francis sailed 25,000 wiles in a thirty-two-foot boat, and was assisted by a five horse-power efi- gine, During Gerbault's four and a half month voyage he met three hurri- canes, when the wind blew at sixty- five miles an hour and huge seas en- gulfed the tiny vessel, wracking the gear. At another period his water supply went bad and he had to jetti- son two-thirds of it. Thereafter he existed on a daily ration of a cup of water for all purposes. After the hurricane came tropical rain. Ger- bault was sp soaked that he' went about naked for ten days. He caught a fever, accompanied by a sore throat which prevented him from swallow- ing. 'Then he became unconscious for forty-eight hours. Gerbault de- clares that during this time Provi- dence must have guided his boat. He was often without sleep for three and four days at a time: When he arrived he had not.closed nis eves for eighty hours, yet he was able to unfold the narrative of his trip in un- faltering Englfsh, which he. speaks and writes with ease. His chief <on- cern was a bath and a change of clothes. Chicago's Beer Industry . Is Reported Flourishing Chicago, Sept. 18. -- Despite the efforts of federal prohibition forces and the Chicago police force, the supply of booze, chiefly beer, has not been shut off or even diminished. The beer industry alone in Chicago has been developed to sales of al- most $30,000,000 a year and where there is this much money the busin- ess will continue. At the same time Mayor Dever at- tempted to clamp down the lid, Chi- cago breweries were putting out 13,- G00 barrels of real beer every week. At $30.a barrel, which was the low- est figure, that meant a business of $640,000 a month, or sales at the rate of $28,000,000. Farmers in United States-pitn big reduction in winter wheat acreage.
