JENNINGS KING STREET TO MEET FASHION Beauty Is Sacrificed by Paris Women for Style. Many Are Willing to Disfigure Fea. tures in Order to Follow Pre- vailing Mode. Not long ago, states a Paris corre- spondent in Vogue, in one of the crowded theaters of the boulevard, a fair-haired woman, sitting several seats in front of me, bowed. "But why should she speak to me," I won- dered, for it was no one thit I knew. Presently, however, wrapped In superb sables, she left her chair, and when she was quite close to me, I realized with amazement that it was the glor fous Martha, once famous for her daz- zling beauty and animation. How appalling that any woman should be willing to so disfigure her self in order to follow the mode! From a perfect oval, her face had become 80 elongated that her chin projected, and there - were perceptible hollows be neath her cheek bones. Since it is the fashion to be thin, there are cer- taln women who, although they pos- sess beauty so rare that it should be 'considered a sacred charge, will be- come absorbed by this stupid craze to reduce their weight. This does not apply to one woman alone, for there are eight or ten in every group who change from day to day, and are cer- tainly far from improved. Often the apparent plumpness of a woman Is, in reality, the result of un- wise selection of frocks. Tbo many among those who would be considerea irresistible fail to understand that they cannot gown. themselves in the same style as their exceptionally slender friends. It is merely a matter of re alizing the proper and becoming line, whether one be slim or inclined to rounding curves. More than ever are women affecting ornaments for the hair. It is even possible to wear diadems and ban- deaux of a sort of frosted passemen- terie made entirely of imitation dia- mends. Even women who possess most beautiful jewels do not hesitate to appear wearing one of these orna- ments, with a result that is truly sur prising In its effectiveness. It may be because the search for them through the old parts of Paris is found to be amusing. One has to make one's way through a crowded street full of delivery wagons, enter a workman's house, clamber up a stair case that is falling to pieces, where finally one discovers the counter be- hind which a smiling shopkeeper dis- plays the marvels of her boxes. These creations made of imitation stones are copled exactly after the models of the great jewelers, and everyone from the most fastidious duchess to the most modest bourgeoisie who longs to im- itate her, has «¢limbed the terrible dark staircase to capture the head dress which will inake her as fascinat- ing as Cleopatra or Catherine of Rus- sla. Cuticura Soap Clears the Skin and Keeps it Clear [Ener on se mt Airmen Use the Old-time Sage Tea and Sul- phur and Nobody Will Know. -------- Gray hair, however handsome, de- notes advancing age. We all know the advantages of a youthful appear- ance. Your hair is your charm. It makes or mars the face. When it fades, turns gray and looks streaked, just a few applications of Sage Tea and Sulphur enhances its appearance a hundred-fold. Don't stay gray! Look young! Thousands of folks recommend this ready-to-use prepa- it darkens the hair ration, because beautifully, besides, no one can pos- sibly tell, as it darkens so naturally }] | and evenly. You moisten a sponge or soft brush with-it, drawing this through the hair, taking one small strand at a time. GLOVES REQUIRE MUCH CARE Hand Covering, if Dainty, Must Not Be Worn When Carrying Heavy Parcels. Gloves are simply ruinous nowa- days, their price is so high--and the cheap ones split directly, states a correspondent. The most economical plan is to pay a good deal, and then take every possible care of them. Lightfor delicate gloves should never be worn when carrying a suitcase for instance, or anything dark or heavy, which will rub or stain them. Keep a sturdy pair of leather ones for these labors, and save white washing ones for better occasions. Here is a splendid method of wash- ing gloves: Put half a pint of petro) into a clean basin. Put the gloves on your hands, and wash them in the pe- trol, till all the dirty marks disappear. The gloves will look yellow and spoiled, but that does not matter, pro- vided that all the dark stains are out. Put them on wooden hands, cover them lightly with thin muslin, to keep smuts away, and stand them out of doors to dry. Leave them all day, so that the smell may have time to blow away. : ' Pour the petrol into a bottle and cork it well. The dirt will settle to the bottom, and the top can be poured off and used again. Of course, you know that you must never, on any account, use petrol in a room where there is a fire or a light. VESTS ARE STILL THE VOGUE Accessory Worn With Tailleur, Quits the Mode in France, American Woman States. An American woman who is travel. Ing In France writes Women's Wear that there is a noticeable lack of the fine neckwear which used to be found on all sides before the war. When the fine linon de fil is found, it is only in thé smart specialty shops and at pro- hibitive prices. The vest, worn with the tailleur, is quite the mode at present, she states, and Is seen in all kinds of materials. Sore have the rather masculine bos oms, preferred by those whose taste disregards the ornate. Vests of stripped pique, plain pique with large pearl buttons, printed jer- sey de sole in oriental colorings, sheer lace and net, printed linen and chints, and duvetyn, are the rage, and many trotteur frocks are desi especially for the purpose of admitting their use. The plisse frills are fluted beauti- fully with electric curling irons, the newest ones falling to the waist and terminating in smart bows of organdie. White, rose, old blue, flesh and pale yellow organdie are the favorite colors for these. HAT TO MATCH FROCK COLOR Suit and Headgear for Charm- ing Effect. 3 To make a sport costume very smart the colors of the dress must be car- ried out in the hat. For instance, a. blue and beige plaid skirt, topped by a lightweight navy blue sweater, Is charming when worn with a hat of dark blue taffeta trimmed with tan worsted. Such a hat may have a roll ing brim, with a band formed by braid: ing several strands of the beige worsted placed around the extreme edge and a similar band finished with tassels encircling the crown. Varia- tions of this may be made by introduc: ing different embroidery stitches. The same model in' soft, bright, colored straw, when trimmed with white yarn, is charming with a sweater of the same shade. We are told that there are but' three mats of ivory in existence, There is genuine and unmistakeable pleasure in its daily use.
