"If the question of tobacco is the cause of the trouble with the con- viets'at the penitentiary, I would say by all means let them have their favorite brand," remarked a citizen to- the Whig to-day." "It must be a hardship for a man accustomed to {tobacco to do without it." Are Working Overtime, . Judging by the stories told in the Kingston police court from day to day, there are quite a number of people in this neighborhood who are doing their "bit" to keep the manu- facturers of lemon extract working overtime. The dry laws have cer- tainly caused a rush in the sale of extract of lemon. ' HW OH Just a Suggestion. It has been suggested that the Kingston police, in addition to their lesson on first aid to the injured, should be instructed on various jags, so that they can tell a whiskey jag from a lemon jag. As Magistrate Farrell has decided that two per cent. will not intoxicate, this point has been finally settled. The Badminton Club. Plans for the reorganization ef the Kingston Badminton Club are under consideration. It is under- stood that this action is taken in anticipation of the demands to be met this winter when outdoor sports are curtailed. The financial re- guirements demand a slight advance ¢&Xxsr previous fees, Build Consolidated School. G. F. The Rights of a Drunk. A drunk hailed before Magistrate Farrell on Tuesday claimed that.the police had no right to a~rest him pro- viding he was not causing a disturb- ance. "I did not think the police have a right to 'pinch' a person unless he is creating some sort of a row," he remarked. Magistrate Farrel put hin wise to the laws governing the On- tario Temperance Act." ; Silo Collapses, One of the newly filled silos at the Homestead Canning Factory, Piaton, collapsed into the street carrying with it the .main power and light wires and breaking the large pole carrying the Homestead transformers and main line wires. The silo was a wood stave one and had recently been erected. It had just been filled mense weight of which proved too much for the strength of the hoops. The silo is a total wreck and there will also bé~a heavy loss in silage. Can Parade Block Traffic. A Whig reader wants to know {if street traffic. He says that he was in is automobile near the causeway, and as there was a vehicle on one side of him and a naval cadet parade on the other, he narrowly escaped running down several persons. It is generally accepted that the king's troops have the riglit of way on the king's highway, but what the reader wants to know is whether a training corps of cadets constitutes part of his majesty"s fighting forces, and if it can block street traffic in such a way | that danger would result.
