WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1090. ; : THE DAILY ~ | SPOOKY MOTORDOM Controlling a small electric motor car and making it stop and move in any direction simply by blowing a whistle. This is the astonishing feat performed by Captain Alan Roberts, a prominent physicist employed dur- ing the war. Captain Roberts gave a demonstration of the possibilities of sound and light control. Standing in the middle of 'a crowd of men, Capt. ~ Roberts blew a blast on an ordinary police whistle. Immediately the elec- tric motors in the car started, and the little vehicle in which were seated two models slowly glided across the floor to him. He blew another blast, and the car stopped, turned around, glided deftly around chairs and ap- paratus, and finally moved slowly back to its starting. plece. By turning a beam of light on and off, gong was made to sound at will, and by blow- ing on whistles of different keys, + small electric light bulbs were lit up . thirty yards away. INSPECT WHEELS AND HUBS Wire Wheels Usually Need Lock Nuts Looked After. On all cars having the rear wheels secured to tapered shafts, and most of the popular cars use this construc- tion, care should be taken that the hubs are kept seated tightly on the taper end of the axle by mcans cf the clamping nuts. The rear hub caps thould be taker off an. the lock nuts screwed up as much as possible with- out injuring the threads. 1f this is not done the hub may work loose on the shaft and by knocking against thu key will certainly spread the key. way ip a comparatively short time. The car should be jacked up when the wheels are tested because a wheel may apparently be tight if the car weight rests on it and yet be loose © when relieved of fits load. Wire wheels are usually installed over mas ter hubs and._locked in position by lock nuts. It is good practice to in- spect these lock nuts frequently and tighten same. If a wheel becomes loose on the inner hub it will creak and in time injure the fitting by Wearing the hub olit of ronnd. -------------- v + AUTO INDUSTRY U, 8.
