Was Invited for Another Year. At a meeting of the official board of Trinity Methodist church, Peter- boro, Rev. ¥. B. Malott, B.A, B.D, was invited by a unanimous vote to remain for a third year as pastor of the church. An increase of $200 in salary was also granted Mr. Malott. Has Accepted Call. Rev. W. M. Kannawin, M.A, B.D., Toronto, «and a .Queen's graduate, has accepted the call extended to him by the congregation of St. John Pres- byterian church, Hamilton, and will pe inducted into the pastorate on Thursday, March 11th. Edward Kinch, son of Isaac Kinch, who lives about five miles east of Kitley, while sawing wood with a sireular saw at » neighbor's, suffered the 1088 of one thumb, by it coming in contact with the saw, cutting it clean off. There were only the baggageman and expressman on the job until sup- ply help was sent. Epidemic of. Fla. A terrible epidemic of fla has been raging at Burrs, Prince Edward county for over two weeks. On Jan. 20th, Miss Haley dismissed sehool and went home sick with the flu. A number of pupils were so fll they éould hardly reach home and within two days every plipil was down with it, and a number of whole families were down, . Remains Taken to Vincent. Mrs. Anpa Roseboom, widow of George Roseboom, Cape Vincent, N.Y., died at Iuverary, Ont. after a short illness of pheumonia. She is survived by her son, Norman Rose- boom, employed at Montréal. The body was taken to Cape Vincent and placed in the vault at Riverside ceme- tery. Daughters Get Estate. Mrs. Louise Maria Wilsog, Picton, who died in Toronto iff October last, leaves the residue of her estate to her daughters, Jessie Noxon, Mary Eaton and Louise Standish, less cer- tain small bequests and deductions, and the disposal of certain articles and a collection of stuffed birds and other ornaments to relatives, The estate is valued at $55,700. Regret Departure of Manager. At Elgin it was learned with regret that: the manager of the Merchants' Bank, K. M. Watson, has been transe ferred to Meaford. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Watson in fHtarewsil gathering presented the couple with a well-worded address and a well- filled purse. Duritig their sojourn since 1916, both Mr. and Mrs. Wat- son filled their place in business aud social relations, Appointed to Board af Trade, J. C. Rice and J. Allen Stroud have been appcinted by the Trades and Labor Council as representatives to the Kingston Board of Trade. The Trades and Labor Council is greatly interested in promoting all measures ealenlated to benefit Kingston in any way, and the representatives to®he board wil give their hoprtiest co operation in dealing with fhe prob- lems that come before it for solution, They are both keen for Kingston and will be valuable members. "The Naughty Wife" Pleased. "The Naughty Wife," Selwyn & Company's comedy, played at the Grand Opera House matinee and night on Saturday. The production is 'brimful of fun from beginning to end, and kept the audiende in roars of laughter. The comedy was written by Fred Jackson, and he put gnough "pep" into it to make it interesting. Reeva (Greenwood, as the wife, and Gertrude Walthers, as Nora Gale, the widow, were exceptionally good, but the entire cast 1s deserving of PROFITABLE YEAR FOR STANDARD BANK Substantial Gains in Earnings, Deposits and Current Loans. It is interesting to note that the experience®of the Standard Bank of Canada during the fiscal year ending the 31st of January last has been the most satisfactory in its history. The net earnings of $776,310 creates a new record. Compared with the pre- vious year, there is an increase of 3 8,866. From earnings, the sum of 455,000 being dividends at the rate of 13 per cent. per annum was paid. The balance carried forward was $360,637--an amount equal to over 10 per cent, of the paid-up capital of item in the statement of the previous year by $133,210. { The total assets at the close o January was $93,405,504--or an in- crease of $9,748,639 compared ith the previous year. The Late James Pepper. After a short illness the death took place at Lanark of James Pep- per, aged eighty-four, a native of Mallorytown, who was for thirty-five years proprietor of the Victoria Hotel there. Before going to Lanark he Was a farmer in Palmerston town- ship, deceased was three times mar- ried, his first wife being Miss Helen Walker, Ottawa, by whom three daughters survive. His second wife was Miss Mary Parker, who left four daughters and one son, and his third wife Olivia Henderson, who surv§ves with one son, William Pepper, Lan- ark, and John Pepper, Belleville, are brothers of the deceased. Ice Cutting Proceeds. Another week of calm weather will complete the harvest of ice for the New. York Central railroad at Cape Vincent, N.Y. About 12,000 tons of icé have been gathered. Likeall that harvested throughout northern New York this winter, St. Lawrence river ice is of exceptional quality, the cakes stored for the railroad being unmarred by frozen snow or blemish- es and of a distinct blue shade. Some 4,000 or 5,000 tons have been stored in the icehouses at the Cape Vincent terminal and the balance has been shipped to points along the St. Law- rence and Ontario divisions. In the Reighiborhood of 8,000 tons more will be cut and shipped, Under nor- mal conditions nearly forty cars can be loaded daily. , Only 6 Months To Live READ WHAT B. B. B.
