The secretary of we Board of of Trade has received a letter from the deputy fire marshal of Ontario inviting representatives to a con- vention to be held in Toronto at an early date fdr the purpose of .dis- cussing the great fire losses that have been sustained snd the con- sideration of more preventative measures. These losses nave heen far aboxe the normal fixe} by past experience, and call for very serious consideration and 'the adéption of more effective methods of control. Kingston has not suffered from a great conflagration or many years, and the reason for this fis that tier buildings are mostly well built, that we have an ample water supply and & igood fire-fighting force; but there have been very heavy losses in other cities and towns which the pro- vincial deputy fire marshal will place before the jconveution. The occurrence of many fires demon- strates the existence of lax enforce- ment of the regulations and the ne- cessity for a campaign of education. * ST.
