The children of the Methodist Sun- day school are being prepared now for the annual entertainment to be held on Christmas Eve, : The new Thomas organ lately in- stalled in the Methodist church is giving good satisfaction. The old one was transferred to the school house for the use of the pupils and teacher. Voting in connection with the great war election was conducted very quietly but earnestly here on Mon- day. Very little electionsering was large number of competitors. Election day passed off very quiet- ly here. A large number of Union- ists crowded the Union Hotel im the evening and awaited returns from ouiside, Special arrangements were made by Edward Martin, proprietor, with the Harrowsmith operator to 'phone in all returns, which came in over the wires to Sydenham. iC. Love, of Picton, is taking up mathematics work in the high school this week. He is attending Queen's but was engaged to finish out this term. Cups Were Donated to Successful Competitors--Lectures Given by Miss Yates. , Announcement was made at the Kingston Poultry Show on Thursday of the winners of the cups donated by various prominent people and firms as special prizes. The an- nouncement was as follows: Silver cup, donated by W. F. Nickle, M.P., for the best exhibition pen, any variety (to be won three times), was won by Curtis Bros. Silver cup, donated by George Robertson, Ottawa, for the largest and best exhibit, any variety (to be won three times), was won by Curtis Bros. Silver cup, donated by E. P. Jen- kins, for the largest and best collec- tion of Leghorns, any one variety (to be won three times), was won by J. Laturney, city. George Holland, silver cup, for the necessary, because, thanks to the loyal and unselfish example set by the 'Whig, politics were pretty well kept in the background and a Win-the-war spirit was manifested by the electors. Last Wednesday afternoon the rural phone fire alarm warned the countryside for miles around - that Holder Bros' horse barn was on fire. Inside of twenty minutes a large force of men from the village and surrounding neighborhood was on hand and by strenuous efforts suc- ceeded in saving all the contents of the building except the hay in the loft, and also kept the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. In the building below were stored Mr. Holder's McLaughlin automobile, ve- hicles, harness, etc., and in the stables were three horses and a cow, all"ef which were removed safely. largest and best collection of Orping- tons, any one variety ( to be won three times), was won by J. The many friends here of the late John Hughes of Kingston, were sorry to hear of his passing away. During the many years of his residence here he was esteemed as an industrious, | thrifty and honorable neighbor and friend. Fred Balls was very seriously ill! last week, but is slowly recovering. C. Holder was also on the sick list. Mrs. Thomas Campbell of Sunbury is the guest of Mrs. C. 8. Clark. Wil- liam Ormsbee was called to Utica, N.Y., recently owing to the death of his sister, Mrs. Lumsden. Alex- ander Sweetman, of the city, was a' guest at Howard Lake's, last week. Sydenham, Dec. 20.--At the parsonage on Wednesday morning at ten o'clock Rev. F. A. Read united in marriage Robert John Green, of Perth Road, to Edna Jones®of Bed- ford township. The happy couple left in the afternoon for Ottawa and other eastern points. A drunken brawl occurred on Red- man's. Corner, late Saturday night, between two local farmers. Con- stable Dowker was in the village to- day (Wednesday) and secured the necessary information. A prosecu- tion will undoubtedly follow. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Uley Blaksley on Saturday, De- cember 15th. Little Miss Katie Charlton, who is in ther General Hospital, Kingston, is recovering nicely, but some time will yet elapse before she will be around as usual. The armouries proved a most suitable place, and the collection on exhibl- tion; declared hy experts to be of a very high class. A feature was the addresses on matters of vital interest to the poultry raiser and breeder given by Miss Yates, of the Dominion Agri- cultural Branch instructional staff. She is intensely practical and inter- esting, and showed to large crowds every afternoon and evening the ad- vantages of certain methods of handling poultry and preparing it for the market and the consumer. {Another feature was a demon- stration of the .marketing systems in Egypt, Denmark and Prince A Ed- ward Island. These methods can be used in Canada, and the Agricul- tural Department showed how by means of a huge chart, lighted by electric lights. It proved very at- tractive, and was studied gy many. At the evening show Thursday Mayor J. M. Hughes came in at nine o'clock and made the draw for the prizes of trios of poultry. They re- sulted as follows: N.. Timerman, 669 Princess street; | Helene De -Mouilpied, 380 Alfred street, and Lieut. E. C. Barrett, 87 Division street. Following the drawing the mayor gave a short address commenting on the value of having a poultry show in the city and the fact that it did much in this crisis of the nation's history to help in Greater 'Production. He then presented the cups to the winners and the show concluded by the crowd cheering for the mayor and the King. A 'second hand automobile is sometimes better than a new one.
