Berlin, April 1. ---A man was shot dead late the other night by a sentry on duty at the fortress at Dantzig. The intruder was seen on the forbid- den ground of the outer "fortifications, fand when challenged attempted to es- cape. 'The sentry closed with him, but he managed to release himself; and made another dash for liberty. The sentry then fired, and the man fell, shot through the head. He was wear- ing workman's clothes, but his identi ty has not been established. It is be- heved that he was .a spy. April 1.--Fredefck of Belleville's citizen, while attending St. Thomas' church, last the victim of a paraly- tie stroke, and expired shortly after, without regaining consciousness. De ceased was sixty years of age. Mr Lingham was in 1895 one of fifty two convicted by the Boers in the uprising at Johannesburg, South Af rica. He was fined $10,000 and sentenced to, two months in jail at Pretoria, but, was sugsequently re leased through the imtervention of the Britieh parliament.
