HORN. : OF Was Found by Police Constable Ly- ing on Sidewalk Partly Covered | Over With Snow----He Would | Have Perished in.a Very Short | Time. i | A dog barking probably saved the | life of an elderly man, named George | ¥. Horn, on Tuesday night. The man | was under the influence of liquor, and {fell on the sidewalk, near Crothers' { biscuit factory, on Wellington street, at a late hour. Snow was falling fast | at the time. He fell face downwards, {and Ji was indeed a wonder that he did not suffocate. Constable Downey was on his rounds, in that vicinity, | and heard a dog barking. He investi- { gated, and found Horn lying on the | sidewalk with the dog close at his | side. He was then taken to the police | station. : Horn was bareheaded, his hat lying a short distance from him, on the | sidewalk, He had no gloves on his | hands' and if he had not' beeh discov- ered at the time he was, the chances { are that he would have perished. Ilis {head and shoulders were covered with snow. Constable Downey was given quite a | shock when he came across the man, jin the snow, and at first was under the impression that he was dead. As soon as he got hold of him, he {could hear a groan, and then he knew { that he was alive. The man was in a | i | very bad shape, and the constable had | { to call a cab to take him to the lock- up. } Roam had S11 on his person when | searched at the police station, and iso had ample funds to pay for his freedom, in the. police court, . this ! morning, when the magistrate impos | od a fine of $1 and costs, or ten i davs. ' The dog was the hero of the story, { as had the canine not barked, the | constable would. not have seem . the The dog knew that all was wanted to make, an A. She will have false | sides el ig and this enlargement will | enable the inspector of hulls to give! her a passefger-carrying eapacity of | 325, instead of 175, as at present. | With an additional fifteen feet of deck-| oom, she would have a passenger lim- | it of 372, but the great benefit from | the lengthening would be in freight | carrying, which would be far greater. | Che council has decided to add false sides to the steamer and put in an lectric light, plant.
