In fact it is the one special element of discord in the otherwise phenomenal prosperity of the west. Cattle dealers in Chicago were much interested in a despatch from Winni peg Uhich stated that beef promises do sauch record prices this fall and winter. The western ranges are vecy poor, and. the cattlemen are findin such difficalty in feeding their ste that they sve disposing of their cattle. 'The result is that at present Winnipeg has plenty of eatile of an inferior grade. For the time being prices are lower, but butchers say that it will be follow- ed by execedingly high prices this win- ter, and that beef of any kind is likely to be scarce, What is disturbing the live stock men is not so much the in- convenience of a temporary shoriage in beef supply as the permanent influ ence that such a didaster as the pres ent entails upon future production, .
