CHOWN. Coal Oil on Dining Room Floor--=| Revolver and Box Stolen----Police Searching for the A most dastardly trick was petrated, on Saturday night, at nome of Perey B. tenac sireet, when some person, as yet unlinown, broke into the house, and after spreading coal oil over the din- !; ing room, set fire to the house and | then decamped, Luckily, the house was not. burned down, but there was | considerable damage. The person who entered the house stole a revolver and | a box or cartridges, which were in an upstair room. When Mr. and Mrs, Chown arrived at their home, shortly | after ten v'clock, having been out during the evening, thev found the place full of smoke, and the blaze | burning itself out in the floor. The | fire was very easily extingwished then | and no call was sent to the firemen. The police are working on the case, | The house was entered some time be- | tween eight and ten o'clock. Mr. and | Mrs. Chown went out about seven | o"daock, and it was eight o'clock when | a young lady, employed as a ser | vant, went ont. At this time, every- | thing was all right. The person who committed the act had evidently been | watching the place, 56 as to be able to get- into the house, as soon. as all the people had gone, The person was | also determined to 'gain an entrance, | as this was shown by the trouble | By climbing up on to the summer kitchen, the bath room window was reached. Then the storm window on this room was taken off, i and then it was a very easy matter to ! raise the inside window, and get into the house. Once inside, the person | made a thorough search of the house, as almost everything gave evidence of having been overhauled. However, i was shown that the marander was not in search of money, as in one of the bureau drawers, which had been | pulled . open, there were a couple of purses with money, and these had been examined and thrown to one side. The coal oil was secured in the shed | and the contents of the can, which | was almost a gallon. were poured out | cn to the floor, and the can thrown] out inte the shed again, | The hardwood floor ard the carpet saved the house from being destroved. Owing to the fact that it was a hard- | wood floor the fire burnt itself out, per: the : (and the carpet served to smother the blaze, Mr. Chown stated to the Whig | to-day that he did not know just what his loss would amount to, as the smoke had gone all through the house, but the damage would be cons #derable, The surprise of Mr. and Mrs. - Chowne upon arriving home to find the house in such a state cap well be imagined. The furniture in| the room was not burned, but suf-| instructions | fered from the heat and smoke. Mr. Chown has been somewhat wiv fortunate, as it will be remembered that two years ago his house was en- tered by thieves, who made away with several articles. This time the thieves secured an entrance to the house by way of ona of the cellar The person who visited the house on Saturday night attempted to igo irto the place by this same win-! {dow but was stopped, ae Mr. Chown had taken warming from the oiher | theit and taken precautions to have it well barred. An investigation show- ed that an effort had been made to pry open this window, Asked if he thought the house had won set on fire by some person who, verhiaps, had some spite against him, r. Chown said that he did not think {that this was the case, He was more lerthined to believe that it had been {the work of some lad whose mind had {become deranged over the re ading of | dime novels. He believes {hat the work of climbing over the roof and! | taking off tha gorm window was ne- {complished by some young person, and is also of the opinion that two might have been engaged on the job, | 'Several rumors have been going the | rounds about the affair. One was to! the effect that a man, supposed tol be urder the influence of liquor, * had | called at ona of the houses near Mr. Chown's and had asked where ho liv. ed, and if he was home. However, this story could net verified. The police are following up all the clues that van be obtained, and every citizen who had heard of the affair to-day expressed the hope hat' the guilty party would be down.
