There are several dogs in Kingston which are a great source of nuisance to horses. Just as soon as they no- tice a horse on the street they run after the animal, barking all the while, and often make an attempt to bite the animal on the log. Drivers have frequently to complain of this. _ There is one Kingston canine that is on the bad books with the police, and if all shat is said of the animal is true, it will pay the death penalty. The dog, while following a rig vester- day, secured a on one of the rugs in the vehicle, and tore a large piece out of it. The animal is very vicious, and it is feared that it may do some serious damage. An enquiry ie Yon being made in regard to the tened to an lessor of i Medical College. For OPEN WATER 'Seen This Side of Nine Mile = ' Point. 1 It was a fine sight, last iall, when the ice ji 'up to a height of twenty feet at the King street break- water, but much wilder is the scene at Nine Mile Pont, where ice has formed into a barrier which iu places appears at least thirty feet in height. Beyond this barrier the lake appears to be open, the white topped waves stretching off to the horizon. 'When the ice once begins to give, as at present, a steady blow from the west will force the ice into the harbor, and if a constant th-wester blew for a few days a serious ice jam might easily take place. Last year naviga- tion opened on April 9th, and as the open water may already be seen the harbor may easily be free of ice by that date. R. Bajus, chief engineer of the M.T. Everything was spring-like in Crum- ley Bros.» big show-rooms on Tues- day, though . the weather man was anything but kind to the fair patrons who anxiously look forward to mil- linery opening day. .Notwithstanding the di ble weather, a goodly crowd turned out, particularly in the morning, and many of the prettiest hats were stowed away in box and drawer, to be in readiness for Easter morning. As in former years, good taste is the key-note of this display. Among the many -beautiful models was an imported hat of Tuscan straw, empire shape and trimmed with the new apricot shade of ribbon, and a beautiful bird of paradise. Another was made of white proxeline braid in the airship style, and trimmed with two beautiful white plumes. The new shapes are the Martha Washington, the Empire, the Mushroom, the Air- Ship, the Buster Brown, and the Bee- Hive, ahd the fashionable shades are apricot and Copenhagen blue. besides many shades of pink, and violet. Beautiful Dresden ribbons are shown, which carry out in their silky richness the beautiful shades of flowers and foliage. The shapes are more becom- ing this spring than for a good many seasons back. for which we should all thank Dame Fashion. OLD CORNER GRATES. Are Gradually Being Replaced By Modern Ones. Regarding corners at which unpleas- ant sewer odors arise, the grates from which these odors come are the salva- tion of many houses, which have no other outlet for noxious gases. If the grates were trapped, the sewer gas would be backed into the houses. For the sake of the occupants, it is better to reach the street. Grates here can- not be trapped, because they would freeze in winter. However, these old- timo grates gre gradually being re- placed. One of the defects about them was' that a small well was madaat the bottom, below the connection with the sewer. Into this well, much refuse collected, and caused a bad odor. The new grates are different. Any refuse that drops into them goes right into the tile sewer, which is rounded at the bottom of the grate entrance. Of course, the best way for veatilat- ing sewers is to have manholes in the centre of the streets. Report Was Untrue. The report circulated through the north of Frontenac county that Rev. W. H.
