Jonginge. When young Mordel--he is only nine teen years old--erossed the ocean to enter the great mathematical contest at Cambridge, he had supreme confi- denice in his ability, and this, after all, is the secret of the average Ame rican boy's success. He did not know that he was to engage in a4 mental struggle with 250 of the brightest scholars from col. eges and universities in all parts of the British empire. But had known it 'in advance, the knowledge would not Weve shaken his detdrmina- tion to show them what an American boy could do. Mordel won the first prize. This en- titles him to a three years' scholar ship. He says he intends tod study hard during the three years to qualify for thé final contest, and he is confi- dent he will win the first graduating prize--the highest honor old St. John's can confer. His success was all the more re markable because his education "had not passed the high school stage. He is simply a wizard at mathematics. In his sophomore year at the high school in Philadelphia he completad the entire four-year course of mathe matics. Taking up higher mathema- tics~a hranch not even taught in the high school--in a short time he had « equipped himself so thoroughly that he could have 'passed the updergra- duate course of any college in Ame rica. And he did it all himself 1, "I like to solve problems, " he de clares: enthusiastically. "When Iwent:, to grammar school 1 enjoyed algebra ' as 'much ag the novels | occasionally read. Indeed, the study of mathema- tics is far more int resting to me than stories told in hook Mordel's parents an s not rich; in- deed, his circumstances are very mo- dest. It was against the wish of 'the father that he entered the high school im 1902. That he swk a posi- tion and learn a practical business was deemed by his father a better plan. . So rapid. was mathematics, his advancement in and such an aptitude did he show for figures during his freshman year at the high school, that his teacher advifed him to pre pare for Annapolis Still believing a business life would be better and more profitable, the lad's father took him to the Univer sity of Pennsylvania to be examined in mathematics by Prof. 1. Schwatt. 'hy Lewis spent every spare minute in figuring why he stayed up at nights sternly commanded, why he got up at four and five in the morning to delve into mysterious volumes, the boy's fa- mily could not understand. So im- mersed was he in algebra and geo metry that on his way home from er- which the packages were wranped The fears and misgivings of the fa- ther were dispelled after Professor Schwatt's examination. "The boy is a geniug,"' he declared, "His ability is remarkable. You would make a mistake not to foster it and see that he develops it. There is a great future ahead of him." So Lewis continued his studies, Library Opened A New World. So interested was he in the lad that Professor Schwatt gave him access to the library of the University of Penn- sylvania. = This magnificent collection of hooks on mathematics opened a new world to the boy. In his junior year at the high school young Mordel was excused from al- gebra by his teacher--he knew all there was to learn--and instead began to teach deficient seniors. "lewis," said his father one day, would it not be well for 'yvou to pre pare yourself and enter the examina- tion to try to win a scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania This, indeed, would have pleased the parents and filled them with pride The boy's eyes sparkled. "No, Father," he replied, "1 shall not try for a scholarship at the uni versity. I shall Vid for one at Cam- bridge England "What is your ambition* How do you intend to utilize the knowledge of mpthematics you "will acquire ? In as tionomy or electricity ?"" These qucs- | Jions were asked him when he return- ed from Cambridge, crowned = with honor. "No, indeed," he replied detetmined- ly, "I hope to . teach--to become an original iavestigator. "There are worlds be solved in mathematics and pro- blems: which men have tried and failed on for years. There is no lintit to the investigator !"' How he shonld get the money to go to Cambridge young Mordel at first did not see. But fired with ambitics. THE DAILY _WHIG SATURDAY, WINS 'M THEMATICAL SCHOLARSHIP until 2 o'clock and went to bed when ' rands he would figure on the paper in . of mysteries ta | Tess of Mordel tical geometry. Then his success in teaching pupils at the high school op- ened a way. He began to tutor pupils in mathe- matics at the school. The teachers and professors interested themselves and helped . him in every way. Gradually | Lewis had a little bank account stea ily growing and his hopes rose, He sent to Cambridge for a eatalo- gue and began to prepare himself for examination in - the various branches. Of thesc--algabra, trigonometry, geo- metrical comics, analytieat, differontiul and integral calculus, staties and dy- namics--this nineteen-year-old boy wus qualified in all but dynamics. He took tp dynamics in June, 1906, and spent the entire summer studying. He also contipued to tutor. Last Ny vember he bade good bye to his father and mothor and started on lis tour to En:land like an old fashioned knight starting on . an unknown Journey ia search of honor, When he arrived at Cambridge the first thing We did was 10 register. The clerks in the college oyod the boy with a twinkle of amuseant in the oyes, When 'the other stadaats lo rn a "Yankee" was gong lo compete I they took it somewhat as a joke. And when they learned he was only a high school scholar they took no pains to con eal their laughter. \ Marked Change In Treatment. "My {treatment at first was quite juiffer nt from what it was afterwards, remarked Mordel, on his return. "AE ter my success jt was congratulations and dinners. Before that they took no pains to conceal their disdain.' The oxamination lasted four days. Mordel sat alone at his doek and work- ed, at the problems handed him. Im- aging the surprise when the averages were made public and Mordel--the Yan- kee hoy--headed the list with an aver- age of 659! This was 100 more than the average made by the second'best competitor.
