And Presented the Needs of / the Methodist ureh in Caring 'For the Men Training of Those to Occupy Its Pulpits. Rev. Dr. Potts preached at Syden- ham street Methodist church Sunday evening, and nearly every seatin the auditorium and the' yf was occu- pied. Dr. Potts delivered an eloquent sermon, taking as his subject, "Soul Winning And Soul Winners," and at the close made an for funds on 'behall of the educational society of the Methodist church, and there was a lib eral response. | x During the forepart of the service the pastor, Rev. C. E. Manning, referred to the fact that Rev. Dr, Potts was this year culebrating the jubilee year of his ministry. Kingston was the rever- end tleman"s home town, and the mem of the congregation took great pleasure in welcoming him back to the city. Dr. Potts chose as his text, Proverbs X1,-30.: "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of 'life; he that winneth souls is wie" People were led to Christ through many agencies--perhaps by the faithful pastor, an evangelist or a Sunday school teacher, Souls were worth saving. On this point every- one would agree. What is involved in winning a soul for Christ? To win a soul for Christ would be #0 start it on a n*w life--from indifference to earnest- ness. . The strongest evidence of de pravity was in not bowing before God, and being indifferent to Him. Unbelief was a damning sin. Jesus Christ had found it. ifteren to do much good on account of unbelief. All be saved, must fist be' won. It was impossible to drives a Soul into the kingdom; one. might be led by: reason or persuasion, but he must be won. It often occurred that a person was sav. ed in an incidental way. Did one ever stop to think of the grandeur of soul winning ? It was by far, better to lead a person to Christ than to wealth. The church of today needed able ministers of the new testament. Dr. Potts preached in Queen street church in the morning, and spoke of the church. The Methodist church can continent, and in Canada Victoria College sent out the graduates. The Educational Society was vigorously pursuing its work of ministry; it would grow and influence Canadian life as the people supported. In the evening, Rev. Me. Sparling fol- lowed up the same theme and showed that education physically, and morally was the best protection any nation could have. He urged sive «nd hold for a full rounded ation 'of the head amt the heart. This year's county council has taken a backward step in regard to the question of county reads, It voted proposal to purchase = the Perth Road and set it free of tolls, and it repealed the by-law passed last Year in regard to a county road sys- tem. It has shown a critical and de- structive attitude, and offered nothing in the way of a constructive plan. Councillor Thom- son gave as the reason for his stand in favor of tolls, the fact that the York Road, from Kingston to West- brook, was not kept in nearly as good condition as it was when there were toll gates upon it The road was giv- cn over to the township of Kingston, but the eouneil of that township not seen fit to good condition, It is argued by Councillor Stoness that it would, in the end, have paid the county council to have purchased the Perth Road, because it would - pe- ceive from thé Ontdrio government over a third of the cost of the road, has keep 'it in its former boro Lake bridge, which is inchided in the purchase. © The county roads system 'regulations also provide for a grant for the repair of the roads. so. that perhaps half the cost would come from the goverhment. The Lough? Lake bridge has to be rebuilt, and it must be properly 'done, be- cause patchwork would be useless.
