Ottawa, Jan. 15.~The farmers of Canada have had a splendid year ac- cording to figures quoted in a govern- ment pamphlet issued to-day. The country's mines have produced metals coal as never before and ihe out- put of the products of the forest and of the sew is greater than during any Previous year. 'The production .of wheat and other grains has been the heaviest in the history of the coun- try. The wheat erop shows an in- crease of about thirty per cent. for the larger part of which Western Can- ada is responsible. Last year's west- ern crop was in the neighborhood of eighty-five million bushels, while for present year it will run to over ninety million bushels. = The report states that ome of the most satisfae- tory features of Canadian = trade is that of foreign business which is doubling itself each year. He made the charge that Mahon was absent from the floor nmety-five per cent. of the time. Mahon, as soon as he could be recognized, stated that any man who mgde that statement was speaking an untruth. Gaines rushed down the gisle toward Mahon and was grabled in front of the spoaker's desk by Mr. James, of Kentucky, and others, who pulled him back into his scat. Everything was in confusion, the chairman pounding his gavel 80. hard that the head flew off onto the floor. With Gaines back in his seat, the Pennsylvanian continued his speech explanation. Cn its conclusion several other members spoke about "docking" pay. While these remarks Were in progress the friends of Gaines and Mahon brought about 4 recon- ciligtion. Mphon rose to a duestion of personal privilege and stated that he did not impugn the motive which prompted Mr. Gaines to utter what was gn untruth about his absence fronw: the house, but his informant was incorrect. O aisles of murmuring shade, When it seemed that hope had died, "And the black night filled the world, How low to me then you sighed! To-day, how the earth o'erruns With rapture 'and joy and Spring! How golden the sunlight falls Where the dark pines sigh and swing! But thanks to the grief that wanes, And the hope that awakes again, My soul is as light-as a bird's-- But the black pines sigh with pain! Mr. Dunean Campbell Scott has a longer poem, and one with a touch of mysticism in it, entitled "The Half- Breed Girl," of which a few stanzas will show the conflict between the civiliged and the barbarian life: Bhe is free of the trap and the paddle, The portage and the trail, i But something behind her savage life Bhines like a fragile veil. But she cannot learn the meaning Of the shadows on her soul, The lights that break and gather, The clouds that part and roll; The reek of rock-built cities Where her fathers dwelt of yore; The gleam of loch'and shealing, The mists on the moor; Frail traces of kindred kindness, Of fued by hill and strand, The heritage of an age-long strife In a legendary land. Bhe covers her face with' her 'blanket, Her fierce soul hates her breath, As it cries with a sudden passion For life--or death. --Arthur Stringer. A TRUE POET. An exquisite little booklet is the Via Borealis, being seven choice jewels from -the muse of Duncan Campbell Scott. The decorations of Mr. How- | e ard gild this refined gold in perfect taste. The whole is laid on the altar | #04 life and good of friendship, being dedicated to Prof. | N Pelham Edgar. Duncan Campbell Scott is a lesson tc poets, all and sundry, says The Toronto Star. He has gone about his work without a brass band. He does not tell casual acquaintances that he is a poet; he does not talk of art unless the topic is suggested by somebody else; he wears neither his hair nor his collars any longer than he should; he makes no claim to be- have like a spoiled child of genius, On the contrary, Mr. Scott is a well- groomed, highly-sensible person; a man among men; practical in the right place; never making the mistake of quoting sonnets in the smoking-room. for twenty-eight- years Mr. Scott -has n in the civil service at Ottawa, during which time he has more than earned his salt as a publie sigvant, 8s well as a poet. His post in the Department of Indian Affairs is no sinecure in 'which the poetic mind, taking refuge in, routine, might find leisure to brood. Far from being a soft snap, Mr. Scott's job is one to take the bloom, off any man's thought and leave him fagged at the close of the day. Under the cireum- stances Mr. Scott has made it eon- venient to have his brightest ideas at nine o'clock in the morning, and to hammer out the couplets 'and qua- trains after hours. It's speaking much for the vigor of his intellect that not a verse of his shows fatigue or physi- cal strain. Mr. Scott's industry in two lines of endeavor works out rath- or awkwardly for himself. While he has been buildingup a great reputa- tion as a poet, he has been build- ing up an equally great reputation as an expert on Indian affairs. So it happens that while he would fain re- tire and serve poesy with a whole heart, the powers say he must hang on seven years longer before he can draw a pension. When Mr. Scott is free at last to lead Poetry home and live with her, he will have labbred for the taskmaster five times 'as long a8 Jacob did for Rachel. Such discipline 'makes good poets, if Mr. Scott's published work is to be taken as an example. In him, in- deed, Canada has a poet who, though Do great advertiser, has Lampman's love of nature, more than his human- ity, and all his craftsmanship. Here is one of his tender moods, a sweet no- thing to be set to music, almost it 'sings itself: Creep into my heart, creep in, creep in Afar from the fret and the toil and the din, Where the spring of love forever flows As clear, as light, and as sweet as the rose, Creep into my heart, Where the dreams never fade, but «their tints refine. in beautiful thoughts of thine, Where morn falls cool on the soul- like sleep, And the nights are tranquil and tranced and deep; " Where the fairest thing of all the fair Thou art, who hast somehow crept in there, Deep into my heart, Deep into my heart. a "Jayness" About a Town.
