"I have never known a greater of cars," said one man this week, t year the C.P.R. did well, and made great preparations to han- dle the wheat erop, and did it well, but this year conditions are quite different. The C. N. R. has been very bux: but the car famine is bad. » fafmer who is feeding hogs, says an old feeder, should know just how each animal is making use of its food. Few hogs were offered at Toronto, this week. Selects quoted at $6.65, and lights at $6.40: sows, $1.50 to $5.50; stags, $3 to $4 owt. In some of the western counties, of Ontario, farmers are importing Foie breeding hogs from the United a | States and paying a good duty also. This should not be. We have as good I ng stock in Ontario as any place in the world. The Gazette, of Montreal, in its an- nual review of the trade, maintains that the falling off in the exports of butter has wet, to a considerable extent the increased returns from as so that, despite the Sumarkubly prices iling for t latter throughout the mason, the aggregate return from the export movement in dairy produce this season were not greatly in excess of those of last sea- and were less than those of the season of 1903; when the make was much larger, although prices were not as high as this season. In fact, while the season has result- ed satisfactorily owing to the high prices prevailing for chedse, the Ga- zette's carefully-kept records do not bear out the impression rather widely entertained that the past season was ner one so far as the returns of the dairy farmers were concerned. The estimate . is. made by the Gazette, that, allowing for the cheese still to go forward, our exports will repre- sent a total of $20,000,000, this be- return to the Canadian dairy armer for the season's exports. These figures t only the export move: pe ment Rr from Montreal, per-| and does not, of course, include the 0 Tharket, which in the last few or. The breeding of numerous stock 'has, too, provided the quantities of manure which many farms sadly need- od. So the grain men are thankful for the cattle industry. Estimates of grain in the west indicate that there is still a considerable percentage of the wrap unmoved. This is not onle true ol our own North-West, but of the Western States, which have sui- fered to the samo extent as the farm- ers of the territories in the shortage of cars. Keep a good cow and learn to un- derstand her. If possible it is better to keep cows in a building by themselves without storage overhegd or a cellar under- negth. Dogs are very expensive things among cows. A dog cam do more damoe in five' minutes than it ever was or ever can be worth. Persons suffering from any disegse or who have been in contact with eontauion, should keep away from the cows and the milk room. Be careful about intrgducing new cows to the dairy herd. They may come from gmong infected stock and not show disease for some' time. There are so many little details to dairying, that constant regding is necessyry to keep posted. Even if vou know you are liable to forget. Dusty or musty feed or litter in the dairy stable is liable to work trouble at any time. The dust from such trash carries great quantilies of bac- teria. ple as possible, both inside and out. There should be no lodgment for dust and no place where stagnant water Cah remain. i Aavthing in the nature of excite ment is injurious to dairy cows. If they are any good they are nervous. Loud talking, running, or even the children is objectionable. Thorough cleanliness all along the line is absolutely necessary to produce a really fine dairy article of either milk, cream, butter or cheese. Bad flavors come from dirt. Milk makes a splendid feed for hogs, but it should not be relied upon to furnish both feed and drink. When a hog is thirsty it needs a drink of water. The water should be pure and clean. There is less objection to cement floors in cow stables than formerly. One reason is because they are better myde and another reason is that dairvioen have found out how to use them. ] If a cow shows any symptoms what- ever of not being innormal health, she should be taken to the hospital stable until ll danger is over. A little precqution is worth a great deal of regret. There is so much tuberculosis that itis better to have the cows expnined at least twice 4 year. There are good veterinariats in every section of ths country who are perfectly capable of conductine the tests and their charges usually are moderate. dairy water sapply for cows is otie of the wry important necessary visions, Cows should have pure water within ogsy reach at all times. We are of a time when men are taking their money from the savings hanks to buy thirtyroent "treasury" stock; when property-owners are applying to loan associations for mortgages on their homes, the proceeds to go into gandi- ly printed certificates of alluring pro- mise, when the talk of mines, claims, of strikes, of this one or that ane who has made a million, and when it seems as though the diving-rod might be- come the people's sceptre. "The craze is general. Nearly every one has a touch of it. It has affected bank presidents as well as messenger boys, doctors, lawyers, ministers. school teachers. Likewise waiters, hack drivers, and porters are floatin~ along .f but which, in many cases, will end "in shallows and in miseries." One of the wisest mining experts in the coun- try, said the other day, in sounding of good mines was one in 300. Lady French. who recently died, has left considerable money to her nephew L Hon, vohn firench, heir to the peerage of his caly and childless brother. The Hon. John aroused a deal of atten tion a year or so ago by enlisting in the United States army in New York, after having resigned the commission, he had held in the British service. Lady firench was dewoted to the land of her birth, and gave a large contri- bution for the construction of the great Roman Catholic cathedral at Westminster. on the condition that all the materials used in connection with her donation should be Irish. She was also very particular about the spell- ing of her name. insisting that it should be written with two small "fis" instead of with a capital "F" and then a smail "1." This led lord Sherborne to. write to the newspapers protesting against this "affectation." -------- Little Dose Cough Cure. The dose of the Diamond Cough Remedy is small.
