Millville, N.J., Nov. 28.--Over this ugly little town, one oi the group of bustling, thriving places lining South Jersey, hangs the shadow of a great crime and a great wrong. Homeless- ness and starvation await old men and women as a reward for their trust in the famous Stock Building and Loan Association, which for more than twenty-five years had stable in financial investment. The air is heavy with curses on the name of Richard Howell. The story unearthed brings to light that from the first day of Mr. How- ell"s twenty-eight years of service as secretary until the moment when, last Wednesday, he turned to wave a smiling good-bye to his friends as he stood on the platform of the Phila- delphia express, not the slightest real efiort had been made to supervise his management of the books or the transactions in the acceptance of mortgages. The investigation now proceeding by a board of new auditors reveal a very simple method of operation. With each payment of a loan with interest Howell cancelled the mort gage, returning the deeds to the bor- rower, and entering satisfaction of claims in" the court records. But in the books the loan still appeared as an unsatisfied claim. Howell presum- ably pocketed the money. In order, however, to cover his fraud, Howell was compelled to pay interest on the now phantom loans in the first years of his operations. When his defalca- tions were still at a comparatively low figure, this was easy, but the de- falcations radually increasing in sums of $5 and $600 at a bound, rendered the payment of the accumu- lated interest more difficult. EFEAVORED PROHIBITION. An Address by Rev. Mr. Craig at Kepler; Nov. Mr. Craig, Cataraqui, delivered an excellent ad- dress in favor of 'prohibition in the church here on November 26th. Speak- ing of the ligense system he pointed out that it had been fostered and protected by "law, and had created a special class, 'having privileges irom which others were prohibited. From a financial view he showed that the re ceipts from the liquor trade to the government were five hundred and ufty thousand doilars per annum, while the liquor trade received from the people eighteen million dollars per year. He quoted from Gladstone that "Drink is more.deadly than the three great scourges, war, pestilence and famine." In thirty-two months of war in South Africa 21,942 men were slain by bullets and discase, while in the same time over 300,000 were 'slain by the drachm bullets." He pointed out that "the license law has been mak- ing for unrighteousness," and undoing the influence of home teaching on the child; and further that some mén of the very worst character were given licenses. Under the present system the hotel keepers had. boasted that they knew when the inspector was starting on his rounds, and the law cannot be enfor- ced. He was satisfied that the new law could be enforced aml would like to be appointed inspector unger the liquor act-of 1902. - Speaking on the question of 'recom- pensihg hotel-keepers, he pointed out that a property in Cataraqui sold a few years ago for $1,200, and imme: diately after receiving some repairs and obtaining a license it rose in value to $3,000, while the property just beside it, which. formerly sold for 81,200, sold last year for $500, The government 'was under no- obligation to recompense license holders us their licenses expire yearly on the last day of May. He quoted precedent for this contention. He showed that as citizens of On- tario we had thus far been forced to acquiesce in the traflic, but now the voters were given "an opportunity to dissolve themselves from it," and he trusted all thoughtiul men would do all in their power in favor of the hill. Who Put Money Up. Hamilton Times Dr. Snider tola us that he received $500 for North Norfolk from the pro- vincial conservative campaign fund at Toronto at the May election, and Mr. Carscalled testifies that he got 8500 from Mr. Bristol at Toronto for Lennox. New York, Nov. 28.--To the accom- panument of music from the mouths of many roaring and snarling wild ani- mals Miss 'Lherese Berg, of No. 261 West Lifteenth street, and Harry Horn of No. 209 West "I'hirteenth street, marched through the "St. Nicholas Garden and were married in a cage occupied by five lions. Though the courage of the bride- groom failed him as he was about to enter the cage, it was restored by Miss Berg. Escorted by several of Mr. Bostock's agents and by J. Cheever Goodwin, who acted as best man, and Mrs. Her- man Weedon, who was the bridesmaid, the couple started through the garden for the lion cage. In the meantime five large lions, with mouth open and tongues stick- ing out, had under the guidance of Weedon, the trainer, been driven into the arena. When the band started to play the wedding march the animals growled. The bride and bridegroom, who were at the entrance to the cage, paused when they heard the roars. Beulah, a long-tailed lion, who was evidently a stranger to wedding cere- monies, crouched for a spring at the bridegroom, but was driven back. The other lion guests began to - eat the sawdust from the floor. When a flashlight picture was taken and an explosion occurred, a scream, which came from the arena, resounded all through the garden. Whether it was a man or woman who shrieked is not DIVORCE CASES. Topeka Has the Record for the Present Year. Topeka, Kan., Nov. 25.--During the ten months ending November Ist, there were filed in the Topeka District court 130 suits for: divorce. During the same period, the Probate court issued 561 marriage licenses. These records show that about a third of the mar- riages in Topeka are failures. The Ministerial Union will start an investigation to ascertain if this con- dition ex.sts throughout the state. Of the 180 applications for divorce, 144 were granted, and only two were de- nied. Nineteen cases were dismissed by plaintifis, and fifty-five cases are pend- ing. Of the 180 applicants for di- vorce, 133 were women. Abandonment is the stock charge. Of the cases heard, defence was made in only eighteen, showing that either se- paration was agreed upon in advance or the defendant was willing that the plaintifi should have freedom. Ninety-four couples in the divorce suits had been married less than five years, twenty less than one year, two less than a month, and one couple on- ly three 'days. Ministers and -others, who have made inquiry into the mat- ter say most of these unfortunate ma trimonial alliances are the result ~ of short acquaintance, short courtship and hasty marriage. Plan Religious Awakening. New York, Nov. 29.--Arrangements have been perfected for the creation of "a_ great religious awakening throughout = the Episcopal churches hereabouts by the holding of a series ol gnissionary Meetings inthe various churches in the first week of Advent, beginning to-morrow. As the growling of lions increased constantly in volume, and they began to move about uneasily on stools on which they were perched, the ceremony was hastened as much as possible, when the different members of the bri- dal party kissed the bride. the lions stopped growling and several of them got down from their perches. The cere- mony was performed in quick time, and afterwards the bride and bride- groom hurriedly left. Queen's Dainty Fad.
