Read- ers of "Lorna Doone" will remember that Tan Ridd's mother hela the po- sition of people's warden in her par- ish from the "time of . her husband's death until the coming of age of her son; but in these progressive days thé office cannot be filled by a woman, cven though, as is frequently the case, she may own the whole parish and present to the living. The question has been agitated much longer than that of female representation in Me- thodist eouncils, and the results up to the present time have been similar. In England as in Canada, it appears that wofhen are welcome to do as much church work as they like, but when it comes to giving them a voice in ecclesiastical affairs it is 'a different matter. . - - - Apropos of the presentation to Lady Cadogan, 'wife of a former lord lieu- tenant of Ireland, of a memorial in acknowledgment of her cliorts on 'be- hall of Irish induste a London tng.) paper claims the honor oi hav- ing initiated this movement for Lady Aberdeen. Subsequently shey or- ganized the Irish section of the Chica vo world's fair, and while in Canada she several times sold Irish lace in person over the counters of some of the leading dry goods stores. .« - of In view of the action of the general synod of the Church of England in forming. one missionary socic ty Hor the whole of Canada. a meeting of the leaders of the Woman's Auxi iary to the! If a new Dominion society is formed, it is probable that Mrs. Til- ton, of Ottawa, who organized' the Woman's Auxiliary in Canada, will he the president. Mis. Tilton is now president of the most important pro- vincial branch rof the auxiliary, that of the ecclesiastical province of Can- ada, which does not mean? the whole of the Dominion by any me: for the name dates back to a time whe mn Canada was a narrower term than it s at present. The Woman's Auxiliary usually regardea as the most im- portant missionary agency in the Church of England in. Canada, and missionaries returning from the west often say. that the bales of clothing and the cheering letters which they re- ceive 'from the various branches of the Auxiliary are their only reasons for supposing that the eastern church has not totally forgotten them. 2 » The Victorian Order of Nurses opening a new Hospital at Revelstoke which proposes, among other things, to train Indian girls as nurses. M. d'Egville comes here from London, England; whete he has had much suc- cess of late, with his classes. The company is not an overly-large one, but every member is selected by rea- son of his special adaptability to the part he plays in the varied and well- balanced programme. The first portion of the programme consists of the re- gulation circle performance, wherein some beautiful ballads, coon songs, choruses, etc., are introduced. This part contains some pleasing features, and the songs so capably rendered are all new 'and so acceptable that en- cores were repeatedly demanded. The company possesses a remarkably well trained mil of sweet singers in W. D. Campbell, E. F. O'Connor, H. J. Brown and id Campieu; their dif- ferent numbers were gems, and the blending of their voices was like a sweet-toned organ. "Under the Gas Pipe," a humorous monologue by Reid and Hoffman, was a novelty enjoyed by all. Campbell and Campbell were' very entertaining in their musical sketch.
