There will be exhibitions, public performances, education- al sessions and in-school pro- grams. All events are free thanks to the support of Canadian Heri- tage and TD Bank. Below is a listing of public Black History Month events: Two exhibits will run throughout the entire month, one at Oakville Museum, 8 Navy St., The Underground Railroad: Next Stop, Freedom!, and the other African Canadian Art Ex- hibition - Beyond the Journey, at Oakville Town Hall, 1225 Trafal- gar Rd., a display that will fea- ture 50 pieces of art by contempo- rary African Canadian artists. The special month kicks off Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. with a recep- tion at the Queen Elizabeth Park (QEP) Community & Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd. The evening includes the in- vocation and opening ceremony by master drummer, Njacko Backo and performances by Di- ana Braithwaite, Chris Whitely and the Round Midnight Jazz Show. There will also be the Oak- ville Early Black History Travel- ing Exhibition provided by Oak- ville Museum and a Poster and Art Exhibition Display, The Life and Times of Ira Junius John- son, presented by Sheridan Col- lege's Humanities & Social Sci- ences department. The exhibit will then re-locate to Trafalgar Park Community Centre, 133 Rebecca St. for the duration of the month. On Feb. 9, Iroquois Ridge CC, 1051 Glenashton Dr. will host Art Hive Open Studio between 2-4 p.m. The event will be facilitated by visual artist Camille King and participants will create art in a relaxed and informal setting. King will also be on hand for an- other Art Hive Open Studio Feb. 23 between 2-4 p.m. at Oakville Museum. On Feb. 17, Milton Public Li- brary, 1010 Main St. E., will host a West African and Afro-Caribbe-West African and Afro-Caribbe-W an Drumming interactive per- formance with Njacko Backoformance with Njacko Backof and World Drummers, 1-3 p.m. There are a couple of perfor- mances planned for Family Day at the QEP CCC between 1-3 p.m.: Steelpan music by CCAH Steel Band and Roger Gibbs and CCAH Seniors with a Parang/ Creole musical show. Sheridan College, 1430 Trafal- gar Rd., hosts Black History Spe- cial Film Screenings beginning at 7 p.m. in Room B125. The eve- ning will include fiction and non-fiction film content related to Black History Month and a fa- cilitated discussion led by Sheri- dan faculty and speakers from the local Black community.
