In theearly 1900snearly half of all doctor-patientmeetings occurred in the home, but as times changed, doctors' visits became more and more restricted to the doctor's office. This changed the accessibility of healthcare, especially for those that couldn't get to the clinic due to illness or mobility issues. Personally, I've always had a fondness for house calls and the value they bring to Canadians in need. When I was training in medical school, my supervisor would take me with her to see some of her homebound patients. Those patients were so appreciative of her visit and it was clear they had looked forward to the house call. I noted that regardless of the diagnosis or the treatment, the visit itself was therapeutic for these patients. It was then I decided that house calls would be part of my practice throughout the rest of my career. Now 18 years later, I've joined National Home Doctor as the Medical Director to help ensure this essential healthcare service is available. I still look forward tomy house call shifts eachweek. I'm helping patients that otherwise would have a hard time accessing care. I'm often asked by friends and loved ones; "How do I schedule a house call?" The process is straightforward: every day from 8 am the National Home Doctor call center is available for patients to call on 416-631-3000 where an operator will assess the appropriateness of the patient's symptoms for a house call. After recording all the relevant information, a doctor is scheduled to visit that patient later in the day. All house calls are 100% covered by OHIP with a valid health card. I'm sopleased thatNationalHomeDoctor, Canada's leadingprovider of house call physicians, has expanded toOakville & Burlington. We're helping to bring back an essential part of healthcare in Canada and supporting patients who need it the most.
