Following the passing of Bill 5: The Better Local Government Act on Aug. 14, 2018, Ontario's Progres- sive Conservative govern- ment announced the minis- ter of municipal affairs and housing would be conduct- ing a review of regional governance across Onta- rio. Oakville Progressive Conservative MPP Stephen Crawford said the review would seek input to help the province ensure that regional government is working harder, smarter and more efficiently while making better use of tax- payers' dollars. He said the review would also work to ensure residents and businesses have easy access to impor- tant municipal services. Burton voiced concerns about what this review could mean for Halton dur- ing his speech at Oakville's 2019 New Year's Levee on Jan. 6. He clarified these wor- ries in an interview with the Oakville Beaver. "I believe there is a task force working away, not inforce working away, not inf public, at the ministry of municipal affairs," said Burton. "I have been told that all options are on the table in- cluding turning the split- level municipal govern- ment regions into single- tier large cities like the City of Halton, the City of Dur- ham, the City of Peel, the City of York, the City of Wa- terloo, that kind of thing."
