PROGRESSIVE CONSERVA- TIVES SWEEP HALTON IN PROVIN- CIAL ELECTION Three Liberal MPPs were voted out in favour of Progressive Conservative candidates in the June pro- vincial election -- a trend reflective of the province, which selected a majority government headed by Doug Ford. In Burlington, Eleanor McMahon was re- placed by Jane McKenna; in Oakville, long-time MPP Kevin Flynn was ousted by Stephen Crawford; and in Milton, Parm Gill defeate- d education minister Indi- ra Naidoo-Harris. The new riding of Oakville-North Burlington also went blue, electing Effie Triantafilo- poulos. PEACOCK, TORTOISE AND ABUSED CAT AMONG ANIMALS FOUND Our readers love a good animal yarn, especially one that finishes in a happy ending. The first of several heartwarming animal tales occurred in June when Martin the tortoise re-emerged after sneaking away from an Oakville backyard the previous year. In July, a Sixth Line resident in rural Milton came home to a peacock in the yard, which he affec- tionately named Lenny. And in a story that wrenched readers' hearts across the country, a cat was discovered outside a Burlington veterinary clinic in October with its face covered in duct tape. Vets removed the tape from the cat's face, who they dubbed Lucky. She was treated for anemia and a urinary tract infection, and was eventually adopt- ed by a new family. MARIANNE MEED WARD WINS BURLINGTON MAYOR'S OFFICE Burlington voted for a new mayor in October's municipal election, with former councillor Mari- anne Meed Ward dethron- ing two-term incumbent Rick Goldring with 46 per cent of the vote. Mean- while, Oakville and Milton voters decided to stay the course. Oakville re-elected mayor Rob Burton for his fourth term, while in Mil- ton, Gord Krantz earned a whopping 13th term as mayor. OAKVILLE FACES SETBACKS IN ATTEMPT TO SAVE GLEN ABBEY In December, the Onta- rio Superior Court of Jus- tice quashed a conserva- tion plan and bylaws that Oakville council had put in place to protect Glen Ab- bey Golf Course from de- velopment. Judge Edward Morgan said the plan went beyond what the town was legally permitted to do, re- presented bad-faith deci- sion-making, and was too vague to survive challenge. The ruling was the most recent in a string of deci- sions that have eroded the town's hope it can preserve the internationally-re- nowned golf course.
