Presents, stockings and carollers at our door. But one thing that shouldn't really surprise us is the Christmas story. Probably you've heard it enough times that you could do a decent retelling of it with a little help. As a minister, I've heard the story told a million different ways by countless pageants and Christmas eve services. But my favourite way to hear the story is a live nativity inMilton which we go to every year. And even though I know the script practically by heart, there is always one thing that surprises me: the baby. As you enter the stable, it's this picturesque scene with Mary, Joseph and a real baby! It's very powerful and worth the walk in the cold. No matter how many times I hear the story, I'm always surprised that God came to us as a baby. The birth of a baby is always a surprise, you never know when they are going to come but when they do, it is a gift. That is the real surprise at Christmas, that God loved the world so much that God would show up unexpectedly in the middle of our lives to be present with us. This Christmas, when you hear the story again for the umpteenth time, may what surprises you be the presence of God. Rev.
