Every day people walk through the doors of Kerr Street Mission in need of help, friendship and love. We have so many heart breaking stories that inspire us to do what we do everyday. This is one of those stories. A family of Syrian refugees brought sisters Marla* and Sacha* to the Kerr Street After School Program (KSAP). The emotional baggage these girls carried to this new country was far heavier than anything physical they could have brought. Loud noises, for example sent the sisters ducking for cover beneath tables. As the girls adjusted, Sacha found herself struggling more to regulate her emotions. When she shared with KSAP staff that she was being bullied in school, they took it upon themselves to work together with Sacha's school teachers to address the issue. Almost immediately, Sacha's outlook improved, and with that a platform for confidence and self-esteem had been established. KSAP was a safe place for these sisters when safety felt unfamiliar; a place with people that they could trust to give them a voice. Transitioning to a new country is very challenging.
