This question is no doubt in the minds of many in Oakville after news broke Monday, Nov. 26 that the General Motors plant in Oshawa would cease pro- duction in late 2019. The move, which the company says is in part due to its desire to focus on elec- tric and autonomous vehi- cle programs, will directly affect the more than 2,500 workers currently em- ployed by the Oshawa plant. The news also raises questions about what is on the horizon for Oakville. The Oakville Ford As- sembly Plant has been a pil- lar of the community since it opened in 1953. It currently employs ap- proximately 4,600 people. When asked about the plant's status and what the future holds a representa-future holds a representa-f tive was positive. "Oakville Assembly has just launched three new utility vehicles - the Ford Edge, the Ford Edge ST and the Lincoln Nautilus," said Lauren More, vice-presi- dent of communications at Ford of Canada.Ford of Canada.F "SUVs are one of the fas- test growing automotive segments globally and as you know, the vehicles built at the Oakville plant are shipped around the world." The Oshawa plant pro- duces the Chevrolet Impala and the Cadillac XTS cars and does final assembly of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. GM has said all these ve- hicles are being discontin- ued. Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton offered the following statement when asked about the Oshawa plant clo- sure and about Ford's fu- ture in Oakville. "I am deeply sympathet- ic to Oshawa and the 2,500 employees who will lose their jobs as a result of GM's Oshawa assembly plant clo- sure in 2019. The assembly plant has been a fixture in the Oshawa community much like the Ford plant has been in Oakville for over a century. The impact will surely be felt by the lo- cal community and well be- yond," he said.
