The program allows those living with a cogni- tive disorder, or who have a history of wandering, to wear a small, personalized wristband that emits an in- dividualized tracking sig- nal. The wristband is a one- ounce, battery-operated wrist transmitter emitting an FM radio, frequency- based signal that sends out a signal every second, 24 hours a day. The transmitters are able to track through obsta- cles, such as concrete walls and forests. "Amazing! Our Project Lifesaver equipment is amazing," tweeted Halton police Const. Marc Taraso following Friday's events.following Friday's events.f "Our @HRPSsirt officers handling the equipment are extremely motivated & dedicated. The high level of intense training that we provide to @HRPSsirt members is worth every dollar. A life saved. Great job by these officers." At the time of the pro- gram's launch in 2017 Hal- ton Police Chief Stephen Tanner said local police were responding to approx- imately 500 missing person calls annually. In addition to being trau- matizing for loved ones and dangerous for the missing persons, these calls can be very costly. Halton police previously noted they spent approximately $13,000 on searching for wandering individuals in 2014, about $15,000 in 2015 and close to $40,000 in 2016. Police have said the time it take to find someone en- rolled in Project Lifesaver averages 30 minutes; 95 per cent less time than those not enrolled, which is par- ticularly important during the winter. Halton police have pre- viously stated the initial cost of enrolling in Project Lifesaver is $400 for the bracelet. There is also a $60 yearly fee that covers batteriesfee that covers batteriesf and maintenance.
