The awards were pre- sented during the YMCA of Oakville's Community Breakfast for Peace and at- tracted a crowd of more than 200 people. "This is a special time when we recognize peace- makers in the community. Those who are dedicated to go above and beyond with passion and the hope of strengthening our commu- nities and making a better world," said Lisa Rankin, vice-president of child care, camp and community for the YMCA of Oakville. "As a charity the YMCA is also committed to find- ing solutions to create a healthier and more vibrant community. To us this means building bridges be- tween all peoples and all communities so we can provide a safe place for ev- eryone to belong." Grade 12 Appleby Col- lege students Zayd Ala- meddine, Ibrahim Ayo- rinde and Rohan Kanti re- ceived peace medals for their Newcomers Tutoring Program (NTP). The teens came togeth- er at the end of Grade 10 to begin providing peer to peer tutoring to newly im- migrated children who were struggling with their educational transition. YMCA Childcare Edu- cator Valerie Walsh said these Appleby youths have made a difference in the lives of more than 15 new- comer children and their families, offering a safe space for these kids to prac- tice their skills. Ayorinde said the group realized the need for this kind of tutoring program during an international service trip to Guatemala. They got to know a young boy and upon looking at his homework came to understand educa- tion systems in other na- tions can be vastly differ- ent than the system in Can- ada. When they returned home they got to work and established their organiza- tion, which continues to help newcomer children in need. "With NTP we hope to do what the YMCA has done and strengthen our com- munity through inclusivi- ty and skill support," said Kanti. "We aim to build rela- tionships with the students that last long past the end of our sessions. Our rela- tionship that we build, we hope benefits them and helps them grow into the best person they can be." Peace medals also went to Frances and Len Pace who, after losing their son Alex to cancer, created Ball de Neige, an annual event that helps fund services for families experiencing the terminal illness of a child. Walsh said, to date, Ball de Neige has raised more than $250,000 for pediatric programs at Wellspring Cancer Care, the seed cam- paign for the new Light- house for Grieving Fami- lies in Oakville and fami- lies in need at Kerr Street Mission.
