"When we talk about sea- sonal outlooks, we're talking about very big picture pat- terns, overall trends we ex- pect to dominate over the next several months. Obvi- ously when we're talking about Christmas, we're talk- ing about very specific things - do we get the right storm at the right time, are temperatures below freez- ing heading into Christ- mas?" Seasonal forecasts are a blend of many factors, stud- ied by a team of long range forecasters, things likeforecasters, things likef what's going on globally right now: El Nino, water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, water temperatures in the Gulf of Alaska. Even the air pressure patterns over Greenland and the Arc- tic can tell meteorologists plenty about our upcoming winter, he said. "There's lots of things that can give us clues about the state of the atmosphere right now and how we ex- pect it to change over the next several months." Forecasters also use weather models, similar to ones used to make short term forecasts every day but there are certain ones more tuned specifically for longer term forecasting on the scale of weeks or months into the future.future.f Forecasters also re- search the past, to find years that have similar finger- prints to the current year; similar patterns around the globe, not just in Northglobe, not just in Northg America. "Weather patterns can give us clues about what wegive us clues about what weg expect to see. We can find years in the past that have had similar patterns that can actually tell us quite a lot about how an upcoming winter can play out. We take all this information into ac- count and we're always tracking these changes, which allows us to produce these seasonal forecasts that at least give us a pretty good idea of what the big picture patterns are likely to look like for the next several months."
