Citing a lack of trans- parency and parental con- sultation by the board in phasing out the program which has been at Oak- ville's St. Matthew for 30 years, parent Theresa Renton said the outcome of the board's decision was "most disappointing." "Blanket decisions without consultation and sharing of key facts with affected stakeholders is dangerous and parents in their communities should be concerned about the motivations of a board that isn't transparent on when, why and how they are making decisions that im- pact their children and the future," said Renton, afuture," said Renton, af spokesperson for St. Mat- thew Catholic School Con- cerned Parents. "It really is an opera- tional matter," said direc- tor of education Pat Daly at Tuesday's regular meet- ing of the board. When looking at French program locations across the board, staff goals include ensuring programs are located in schools that can accom- modate growth, minimize or possibly eliminate fu- ture relocations, and mini- mize the use of portables across the system, said Da- ly. St. Bernadette was se- lected because it appears to have sustainable core, regular track enrolment and the ability to house the program within the school, whereas the St. Matthew location requires an increase in the utiliza- tion of portables, said Da- ly. "When parents are reg- istering their child in any optional program they are aware that they may be choosing to have their chil- dren in different schools and in some cases they are leaving their home com- munities. I tend to agree this is an operational mat- ter for sure," said Burling- ton trustee Susan Trites. "For those of us that were on the committee who did all the French pro- gramming review, we unanimously decided to maintain all three pro- grams, but certainly there were going to be some sac- rifices and some bumps and bruises along the way," commented Burling- ton trustee Arlene Ianto- masi. "I think this might be one of the bumps and bruises and I know nobody likes it and we don't like it any better than anybody else, but these are not easy decisions. I don't think staff just pulls it out of the air; they do a lot of re- search to get there." The decision to relocate the EF program to St. Ber- nadette is operational and St. Matthew is not the first school that has had to go through this, added board chair Diane Rabenda. Early French Immer- sion programs, currently located at four Halton ele- mentary schools (one each in Milton, Oakville, Bur- lington and Halton Hills), are also reviewed regular- ly to ensure both long- term sustainability of the optional program and suc- cess of regular stream pro- grams, said Andrea Swin- don, HCDSB strategic communications. As of the fall of 2019, the EFI program, currently of- fered at Milton's St. Bene-fered at Milton's St. Bene-f dict CES, will switch to St. Scholastica CES. Students currently en- rolled in the St. Benedict EFI program and the St. Matthew EF program will be allowed to continue through to Grade 8. HALTON CATHOLIC BOARD VOTES TO RELOCATE ST.
