"We changed a few of the elements to increase the difficulty, and some of the foot- work. I felt I was able to express myself a lot better." His free program helped To- man take the silver medal in the senior men's competition Sunday. He was one of six Skate Oakville competitors to earn a spot on the podium. It had been just over a month since Toman had com- peted on the same Sixteen Mile Sports Complex ice at the Skate Canada Autumn Classic. It was an opportunity to com- pete against an field that in- cluded two-time Olympic and world champion Yuzuru Ha- nyu. And though he had com- peted internationally before, he'd never had the chance on home ice. "It was amazing to be able to compete where you work and train and be able to show ev- eryone what you can do," said Toman, who finished sixth in the field of 18 skaters from 14 countries. "The stands were full and there was so much en-full and there was so much en-f ergy in there." In part, it was wanting to re- capture that feeling that led to the changes. And with his spot at Skate Canada Challenge in Edmonton Nov. 28-Dec. 2 al- ready secure, sectionals be- came the opportunity to re- make his free skate. Though his score, 134.75, was slightly lower than the 140.61 he scored at the autumn classic, Toman was glad he made the changes, and looks forward to fine-tuning it lead-forward to fine-tuning it lead-f ing up to Edmonton. "This was my first real run- through and I thought it worked really well," Toman said. "It gave it a bit more ener- gy. I had to provide my own en- ergy." Hélène Carle surprised her- self by earning the top score (58.54) in the senior women's short program. And though she slipped to third after the free program, Carle said herfree program, Carle said herf performance sectionals has given her a shot of confidence as she prepares for the Skate Canada Challenge. "It hasn't been the easiest year, but I have more confi- dence with the elements I'm putting out in my program," Carle said. "I know I can go out there and skate clean." And there's still some room to boost that score. Carle re- placed a triple Lutz with a tri- ple Salchow for sectionals, but hasn't ruled out going back to the more difficult Lutz. "I'll keep practising leading up to Challenge and re-evalu- ate whether it's worth putting it back in," she said. Skate Oakville's Olivia Far- row turned in a fourth-place finish in the senior women's di-finish in the senior women's di-f vision.
