"Human trafficking is happen- ing in our backyards," said Dan Ciardullo, a detective with the HRPS drug and morality unit. In 2017, HRPS investigated 11 oc- currences of human trafficking and made 10 arrests in relation. So far this year, police report 11 occurrences, and have made nine arrests. He says that in the past two years, Halton police have signifi- cantly increased their resources in policing human trafficking mat- ters, which may be a factor in the rise in arrests. Compared to 2017, police inves- tigated four occurrences in 2016 and made eight arrests. "It's more prevalent than we be- lieved it was in the past," said Ciar- dullo.
