WOMEN CAN'T BUN HOTELS. Their "Cheese-Paring Economy' « Spoils All London, July 26.--Discussion of sil: ly season topics has develo a ouri- ous indictment of woman's capacity in a field where it is expected that she would be successful. Tt is akserted that she cannot keep a hotel. Several complain that in England, at all ev. ents a hotel m by a woman is invarigbly uninhabitable. is ex- planation is given by one writer: "It is absurd, shart sighted, cheese: paring edonomy which is one of the defects of woman's quality. AND FOR LAST THREE YEARS » HE OUTLINES HIS LATEST IN- VENTION. For Moving Ships and Railroad Trains--An Extension of the Plan to Send Wireless Tele- graph Messages -- Building Necessary Works. New York, July 26--After working for more than three years on the transmission of electrical evergy with- out wires Nikola Tesla announces that be has completed an invention by which it will be possible not only to send wireless messages for thous ands of miles without wires, but that he will be engbled to send ocean liners to Europe and have railroads cdrry passengers 100 miles an hour by frawing their power from the air. Mr, Tesla has completed o large power house at Wardenclyffe, on Long Island, © and is building ot throughout the country and one in Scotland, between which he says he intends to send electric currents of sufficient voltage to endble steamships and railroads to draw all their power, The power house at Wardenclyfie oc- cupies nearly three acres of ground and is fenced in so that no one can get 5 view of it except those working within the inclosure. "I expect to make a complete an nouncement of my plans shortly," Mr, Tesly said, "and when 1 do many persons will be surprised. 1 have been taking out patents on my inventions ofr the transmission of electrical en ergy without wires for the last three yours. "By means of the current which will be sont hetween the different stations 1 will be able to draw power for al most any purpose. That 1 will be en abled fo get foree with which to op- erate railroads and steamships from enrrents passing through the air be- tween power houses is an gesured fact, All my experiments so far have prov: ed rl and I am now devoting ull my time toward getting things on a working basis. "The whole idea in a nutshell is simply an eéxtension of the plan to send wireless telegraph messages." About 200 men are working on the Tesla-plant at Wardenclyffe. The house is a large round iron structure and looks like the ordinary gas plant. There are several poles gbony sixty feet in height ricing from the top of the house and from these the power will be sent, Mr. Tesly asserted that there was a similar power house in Scotland and that this one was glmost entively completed. Other houses are. being built near Chicago and San Franciscg. LIVED A DUAL LIFE. Divided Her Time Between Two Homes. Winsted, Conn., July 26.-- Mrs. Su san Brady, young and attractive, is said 10 be one of the cleverest biga- mists this state ever produced. Neith- er of her two hushands desires to prosecute her even should her where: abouts become known. Frederick Brady, Norfolk, Conn., is husband No. J, and Samuel K. Ed wards, of Springfield, Mass., is hus band No, 2. In 1502 Mrs. Brady was marrierl to Brady at Millerton, N.Y, One chill was born to 'them. Mrs. Brady, while visiting in 3pringfield, was joined in wedlock to Edwards. Mes. Brady, or Edwards, divided her time between hor home in Spring field and the one in Norfolk up to within a month ago, when Edwards learned that his wife had a hishand and son living in Norfolk. He went to ber with the story, but she did not de- ny it. Brady recently heard that his wife had another hushand living i) Springfield, and when he asked her if the report was true she said it was. Brady will sue for a divoree. The Inir bigamist, before taking ber departure, told a friend she might have to serve a vear or twe in prison, but she would not mind, thst. -------------- Furious Wind Storm. London, July 26.-The Times says it bas aufhority to add the following particulars of the ofier of the Cans dian Pacific to establish a fast Atlan tic service : The gmpount of the sub- siay must depend upon the sped of the passenger stennwers which «if be finally decuded by the Canadian and imperial governuivats for (a twoniy- knot service. As at present suggested the Canadian = government will have the power to allot £175,000 per an pwn for tem years. It Js expected that this will be supplemented by half as much from the British govern: ment. (Of course every adaitional knet will require a greatly increased sub- sidy, and a twenty-three-knot service would probably not be possible with- ont a subsidy of £400,000 , year, The prospects of a final arrangement, while the Canadian ministers are still in London, are = conwidered to be bright. It is regarded as essential, both by the Canadian government and the Canadian Pacific railway that a fast passenger service of four steamers should be combined with a fast freight service of from ten to twelve steamers in oraer that the Morgan combination may be successiully fought. The Canadian Pacific railway is prepared to do the fighting. The passenger steamers, if built, will be designea to suit many requirements. They will be available as armed eruis- ers in case of war, and will be readily converted into troopships. Steerage ac commeodation will be provided for a large mumber of emigrants. It was not found possible to avoid Quebec as a summer port, although Montreal was successfully ruled out. In many re spects it would have been hetter to have got rid altogether of the dao gerous St. Lawrence passage, but public sentiment in Canada was toe strong. Halifax wil be the winter port. Says It's A Feeler. New York, July 26. ~The Tribune's Loudon cable says 1 Lord Stratheona and the Canadian ministers neither confivm nor. deny the reports, tele graphed from Montreal ana Halifax, that the Canadian Pacific railway has offered to establish a fast Atlantic passenger service and a greatly im proved cargo' service, with complete appliances for cold storage. It is probable, however, that an offer of some kind has been made for the pur- pose of assisting Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Sir Wiliam Mulock and Hon. Mr. Fielding in their negotiations with the hoard of trade and their confer ence with the premiers of New Zea- land and Australia. The announcement' serves as a foel- er for drawing out the comments of the English press on the systematizea plan for fighting the Morgan combina- tion, and the earliest responses, with a few exceptions, gre favorable. News paptrs say that there is 5 strong pub: lic sentiment in Haver of defending British maritime interests. ------------------ DESPERADO TAKEN. Had Long Defled the Authorities of Nova Scotia. Halifax, N.8., July 26.--A despera do, who for seven years has been de fying the authorities of Nova Scotin has been captured in the streets of Bridgetown, on the Bay of Funay, Frank Sabeans, burglar and highway man, has been coming and going le tweeny Annapolis county and the Cui ted States, and all the attempts of the police to take and hold Lif: have failed. He found refuge ani secwrity in the mountains of Annapolis, Seven years ago detective Power, Halifax, with a posse, went over the mountain in the early evening and watched all night for Saleans, but san no trace of him until grey day- light, when he was discovered. The detective was stationed in Sabeans' father's house, and waited until Frank arrived at the house ana opened the aoor, when Re thrust a shotgun into the desperado's ince and ordered him to throw his hands up or he would shoot. Sabeans submitted, and was brought to town ana jailed st Anna polis, but he soon escaped from his eoll, and. was not definitely heard from again until two years ago.- An attempt was again made to capture him, but it failed. Thursday - afternoon - policeman An- derson, a 225-pound man, and more than six feet high, saw him in Bridge town. He went up to his men and laid his hand upon him, and immedi ately got a blow on the jaw, but the policeman was equal to the occasion, and returned the compliment between the eves so effectively that Sabeans was knocked out and bandoufied be fore be could get away. Sabeans had intenaed going to Wa terville, but got off the train at Bridgetown by usistake. A DEFENCE SCHEME. Bleeding from a mumber of gashes in the face, apparently weakening, and clearly unable to cope with Fitewim noms' superior skill, Jeffrios delivered two lucky punches as Fitzsimmons paused in his fighting to speak to him and torned the tide. The baitle was brief but noteworthy and will live in plgilistic history. Fitzsimmons tried once to arise from the mat, but sank down again helpless and heard himself counted out, where Some "but & moment belore he had apparent iy the better of it, "I will nover fight again," said the battle-scarred veteran of the ring, when be had sufficiently recovered to talk. "You are the most dangerous man alive," said Jeffries in return, "and 1 consider myself lucky to have won when | did." Fitzsimmons had been fighting at a furious gait, cool and deliberate, and chopping the champion to pieces with the termific rights and lefts that have made him famous. It was the dranghi- horse and the racer from. the tap of the gong. Whe the men came togeth. er Fitzsimmons appeared rather wor ried, but upon the opening of the first round he assumed an air of absolute " and fought with the delibor: ation of the general that he is.
