"id ) OF THE ENGINEERING SOCIE- Y ry, OF QUEEN'S. Held at British American Hotel Last Night--ThHe Banquet a Stitcess--~Toasts, Speakers of Faculty, Songs And Music. The engineering society of Queen's university held its fifth annual dinner last night at the British- American hotel, whose dining room was filled to its utmost capacity. This banquet of the engineering students was quite as successful as those of past years, except in the speech-makng depart ment, which was hardly up to the for- mer high mark. But perhaps this is accounted for by the fact that the toasts did not begin until hall an hour after midnight, the serving of the excellent dinner requiring exactly three hobtvs, and that the speakers necessarily cut their remarks short. Stiil the utterances were wholesome. The dining room was very extensive ly draped in Queen's colors. AY Rédmond, president of the engineer- ing sodety, occupied the chair of hon- or, on either side of him were | Profs. Miller; Gill, Goodwin, and Dupuis, and Messrs. Kirkpatrick, Fra- ser, Rothwell and NeGil and Toros representatives. » ates ont Queen's student bodies were Messrs. W. C. McIntyre from divinity, J. G. Gray from arts and Brandon from medicine. The Peaniclont proposed the toast of "The King" which was received and drunk with acclamations, "Our Country' was given hy O. N. Scott. Prof. Goodwin, in response, spoke of Canada being so great that whole parties of surveyors could get lost-in the most civilized parts, as in the case of & recent K. & P. railway gurveying party: (Laughter). The speaker said that when a man thinks his country isnot a good one, it is time for himsto pass to another one, The people; he claimed, should have faith in their country and in the possibility to: develop it. This is an age of engineers, said Prof, Goodwin, who struek 'a keyv:note. The engineer in at present taking a great part in the business: of Canada, and in the futire the highly trained scientific man is the one who, will regulate the affairs of the country. Prof. R. Catr-Harris followed Prof. Goodwin, and spoke of prospects of engineering in Canada, interpreting the signs of the times. The prospect for engineers on this continent, he declared, "was unlimited. Pol, Harris pointed out that the present genera tion was destined to witness most ra- dical changes in transportation especi- ly. The faculty song was sung by 8. S. Rose. It was a bright little composi tion, and described the "fairy tales" which the engineering professors were said to be palming off on the stu dénts. In response to repeated calls and ap- plause; Prof. Miller made a few joeu- lar remarks. He lamented the fact that there were no lady students in the; geology class. There had been some, but they had gradually driffed away during the past few years. MM. B. Baker toasted 'Queen's and her Faculties," and responses were given' by Prof. Dupuis and Mr. Fras- or, the Scotch lecturer om mathema- tics. Prof. Dupuis stated that as Prof. Miller was in need of ladies in his class, he (the speaker) would will- ingly spare "him some of his. (Ap- plause). He had been connected with | ' s for thirty-five years) and sotnetiines had ladies in his classes and sometimes had not. "They are little chips in porridge," declared the professor, who didn't explain the wsig- nificance of this remark, which caused Sonfusiof among the young engineer- ihg students who were listening at- tentively to all the talk about the maidens. In conclusion, Prof. Dupuis stated that he would like to sce one change in Queen's senate--he would like to see more scientific men there and less theologians. (Applause). However, he was' contented with the old adage that everything came to those: who wait. The speaker asked engineering = students: to not forget Queen's when they became million- aires. . Mr. Fraser said that when he came to Canada last fall he found life here and in Scotland did not differ so much after alls The fact that Queen's was modelled after the Scottish uni- versities' made him feel at home. One striking difference he. noticed be- tween Queen's and the universities in his. native land, and that was the 'large part of the university here giv- en over to the engineering and practi- cal science departments. In that, be thought, Scotland might well take a lesson, and do likewise, giving less to the literary subjects. A. J. McNab proposed "Sister So- cieties," and replies were given by IL E. Scott, of MeGill, and H. P. Rust, of Toronto school of practical sciemoe, | "The Profession" was given by J. 7. McLennan, and elicited responses from C. G. Rothwell, Capt. Bogart and Mr. Kirkpatrick. EH Peiwe and A. J, Stillwell said nice thitga ut "The Seniors," and G. C. McKenzie and A. Swine ton softly snd timidly piped the prsises -of - the ladies, omitting all discussion of women's rights and the new woman. "The Press" was also wete rendered by Messrs. sand Swinerton.
