Dubbed HAL YES!, the program - which brought together 50 students from three Halton-area schools - was an opportunity for those in Grade 9-11 to get involved and make a difference in their community. Fostering critical self-reflection and creating a climate of inclusion and respect are among the goals of the program. "It has been an extraordinary project, which has highlighted the voices, insights and experiences of our youth partici- pants," said Sita Jayaraman, Director of Community Services for Indus Communi- ty Services, which oversaw the project. The program wrap-up saw students en- gage in a meet-and-greet, share their expe- riences and hear from spoken word artist and motivational speaker Dwayne Mor- gan. Students showcased their talent through a variety of song, dance, poetry, art displays and spoken word. Said Halton District School Board Su- perintendent of Education Robert Ea- tough, "We need to work through our youth, our students, to create better equi- table opportunities for them so that each one can reach their full potential." The program was funded by a $71,900 grant from the Ontario Trillium Founda- tion. Project coordinator and HAL YES! Pro- gram Facilitator Leena Halees closed out the day by saying, "This is what Black ex- cellence... Muslim excellence... student ex- cellence looks like! Our future is in good hands!" COMMUNITY Youth confidence-building program a success? HAL YES! Nicole and Serena convey their message through spoken word at the HAL YES! Program finale. Indus Community Services photo
