They have released an online question- naire that asks candidates from the Milton riding, Oakville and Burlington, Welling- ton-Halton Hills and the new Oakville North-Burlington, questions on five key is- sues. "The reason is simple," said Gary Carr, chair of the Halton Region. "We at the re- gion have more revenue coming from the province than even the local municipalities do." Candidates will be questioned about their positions on the regional and provin- cial regulatory jurisdiction of the proposed CN Rail hub in Milton, as well as their thoughts on road and infrastructure invest- ments in order to meet growth mandates. In that case, the region is asking the province to join them in taking legal action against CN. "It's very important the provincial gov- ernment stand with us in our court chal- lenge with CN," he said. In addition, the region is asking about the prospective MPP's interest in advocat- ing for public health programs in order to close a funding gap that is upwards of $9.3 million. The form also touches on issues with the region's servicing for ambulance calls, as well as the promotion of government assis- ted housing programs in the region. Carr has been calling for the implemen- tation of new technologies to increase re- sponse times for ambulance dispatch calls, and says the province is finally moving for- ward on the topic. Carr says the region follows up to mea- sure the impact of the questionnaire, which the region has been sending out to candi- dates since 2006, as part of their advocacy strategy. "Most of them are very good," Carr said, at filling them out and sending them back for the region to post on their website. for the region to post on their website. f "Later on, after the election we follow up with them to ensure that they're carrying our message forward." Sometimes, he says, the candidates will have their researchers fill out the question- naire on their behalf. "Upwards of 25 per cent of our revenue actually comes from the province," said Carr. "It's extremely important the candi- dates fill it out and let us know where they stand."
