Rain Storm

On Saturday evening last this village was visited by a storm of uncommon severity, the rain coming down in torrents, while the wind below with such force that an umbrella, instead of being any protection, from the rain only operated as a sail, causing the bearer to make long tacks to the south, in spite of all he could do to steer a straight course. Next morning it was observed that part of the smokestack above the furnace at Mr. R. C. Smith's old mill had been blown down, and when Mr. Williams, the caretaker of the English church, went up to open it for service, he found the centre window of the south end lying on the floor with eight of its panes of glass broken. The storm appears to have raged over a very wide area, and we are sorry to learn from the city papers that a great deal of damage was done to the shipping on Lake Ontario, three vessels having been wrecked and all hands, thirty in number, drowned.
