Friday, July 12, 2019 7 Brooklin Town Crier Council Pushes On Highway 412/407 Tolls & Lands At the June 24 council meeting, members of council voted unanimously to restate its position supporting the elimination of tolls on highway 412. This was in light of the province indicating that the tolls were under review. Council's statement was as follows: Whereas the Council of the Town of Whitby has on numerous previous occasions requested that the tolls on Highway 412 be eliminated and the employment lands abutting Highways 412 and 407 be released; and, Whereas a new Minister of Transportation and Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade have been appointed; Now Therefore be it Resolved: That Council reaffirms its previous request that: The Ministry of Transportation expeditiously identify, declare surplus, and release designated employment lands that were not required for the construction of Highways 412 and 407; and, That the Province eliminate the tolls on Highway 412 which are a distinct disadvantage and disincentive to Durham Region to efficiently move goods, services and people and to attract and retain prestige industrial and office investments and value added jobs for the employment lands abutting the provincial highway. That the Clerk be directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Durham area municipalities, all Durham Region MPPs, John Henry, Regional Chair, the Honourable Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation and Minister of Francophone Affairs, and the Honourable Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and Chair of Cabinet. The Town of Whitby has set flags at all Town facilities at half-staff to honour the passing of former Mayor Jim Gartshoreat age 90 on June 19. He began his municipal career as a Town Councillor, serving from 1972 to 1975, and was mayor from 1975 until 1980. "Jim was a great leader who cared deeply about our Town and its residents" reflected Mayor Mitchell. "Both as a Councillor and Mayor, he made a number of important and positive contributions to our community. Our deepest condolences go to Jim's family and loved ones." As mayor, he initiated and completed a number of major facility and infrastructure Projects, including the opening of the Whitby Operations Centre; the Whitby Seniors' Activity Centre and Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village; the establishment of the Port Whitby Marina and Harbour; the relocation of the Whitby Public Library; the introduction of a new water plant; the creation of Rotary Centennial Park; and the development of the Brock Street bridge. Gartshore also oversaw the opening of the new Town Hall building at 575 RosslandRoad East in 1977, making him the first mayor to serve in the new building. He also championed local support for community projects and was made a lifetime member of the Whitby Kinsmen Club, formerly serving as club president and district governor.
